The UNRWA got defunded creating a massive void in terms of aid to Palestinians in Gaza. It got replaced with the murderous “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation” that kills people trying to get aid. We collaborated with UNRWA around a month ago on a sewing project in a shelter school in Nuseirat. The project included a training session for women to help followed with a package given to each of the 20 women. Unfortunately due to high commission & our struggle to get cash for the packages that at the moment cost $417 each. Financial independence and emotional relief is the goal of this project and supporting people in building their own income is a key value of the Sameer Project. Sustainability is necessary but extremely difficult during this time. While we get empty promises about a ceasefire, we will keep looking for ways to create sustainable projects for women in Gaza. They’re working two and three jobs just to keep up. In the U.S., 40 percent of workers do not have $400 for an emergency. Now put AI on top of that—the insecurity that we are all experiencing, the fact that people are waking up and some new technology is landing in their jobs without training and without having a say. Of course they’re going to be anxious and feel insecure about what the future holds. And so I really think we need to stop and ask, “Who are we doing this for? What are the results we want? And how do we get there?” We get there by including workers in the process. They shouldn’t have to be at the end of the cycle. They should actually be upstream.
