A few months ago, I wrote about being voicepilled after experiencing the magic of AI-powered voice-to-text. Today, I sit down with Wispr Flow Founder Tanay Kothari to ask the question: “What if we could get rid of keyboards?" Tanay is ushering in a world where voice becomes the primary interface with technology. Here’s the idea he returns to, again and again: the keyboard was never meant to be a long-term solution. As he reminded me, there are 700 million people with dyslexia for whom “using technology means spelling words with a keyboard—the literal hardest thing for them to do.” Millions more with Parkinson’s, ALS, or motor challenges find typing impossible. Older adults peck at keys with two fingers. Even fast typists are contorting their minds into an outdated input device. People assume switching to voice is about speed, but voice interfaces are much more than time savers. Typing itself forces the mind into a choppy, self-editing posture. Every sentence becomes a series of micro-interruptions: spell this, fix that, move this clause, check that comma. By contrast, speaking lets the idea come out whole. “Just tell me your gibberish,” he said, “and I’ll take care of it.” The power of what he’s built with Wispr Flow is that, within half a second, your ramble becomes polished prose, and the median user hits send without even rereading. The trust is immediate. And the behavioral effects are fascinating: sales teams sound more human, customer service agents sound warmer, “bad texters” suddenly become articulate communicators. The most intriguing point Tanay made is that voice will force us to rethink hardware itself. Our devices today were built for screens, keyboards, and apps. They assume computing is something you sit down to do, staring into a rectangle. But an AI-native world could leverage ambient listening, lightweight cognition, continuous context, and interaction that feels like talking to a second brain. If that’s true, then voice is the opening act of a much larger shift away from screen-bound computing toward a world where technology blends into the background and our attention returns to the foreground. A world where we walk through cities with our eyes up, not down. A world where AI augments cognition rather than fragments it. Tanay’s vision is radical only because we’ve lived inside the keyboard era for so long. His out-of-the-box thinking is allowing us to finally work beyond the box itself—the screen that mediates every digital interaction most of us have ever had. But once you see what’s possible, it feels less like science fiction and more like overdue course correction.

A little bit more on my Novel editor. One of the things I loath about word processors is that they are so unaware of how prose is structured. They treat the line as the most atomic unit of text. But writers think in words, sentences, and paragraphs. Never lines. The editor I am working on has navigation tools for word, sentence, paragraph, and scene. You can navigate and move content at each level. All from the keyboard with some intuitive hotkeys. A pointing device like trackpad or mouse engages the part of your brain that processes spatial input. That's not where you want to be when writing. It can take you out of your flow state. And it is physically quite slow because your hands must move away from the keyboard. So I'm rethinking editing with the keyboard. It's not hard to learn, and it makes editing faster. I haven't been using it long and already I'm barely reaching for the trackpad. Follow me to be the first to try this out. #WritingCommunity

They want to erase our culture, our flag and sell of our borders to the rich. "If you look at what has happened in Eastern Congo, and everything we have gone through over the past four or five years, and you look at what we have left behind, there is evidence. There are facts that speak for themselves. In Eastern Congo, in Goma and elsewhere, the whole world came together against Rwanda. The whole world lined up against Rwanda: the FDLR and all the groups associated with it that have been mentioned, the Wazalendo, the Burundian forces, the FARDC, the South Africans, and many others. I would rather not spend time naming them all; there were so many. When you look at the scale of what they had assembled there and what they were up against, it is clear that what they were trying to do was wage war against Rwanda, destabilize our country, and reshape it the way they wanted. In fact, they said so themselves. Ordinarily, if someone were to say these things without evidence, you might think they were simply trying to frighten people, to intimidate them. To convince themselves that what they wanted was within reach and that they were going to achieve it, they even brought in mercenaries. You know that many of them passed through here. We gave free passage to our enemies, allowing them to leave a war they waged against us, a war that was never theirs to begin with. That alone tells you something. And it is also something for which our forces, together with others who stood with them, deserve recognition. As for Rwanda, we will always be in a struggle for our very existence. Regardless of those who wish us harm, surrounding us from many sides, one thing remains true: we should and will always be a step ahead of them. It is our right. It is our will. "If you look at what has happened in Eastern Congo, and everything we have gone through over the past four or five years, and you look at what we have left behind, there is evidence. There are facts that speak for themselves. In Eastern Congo, in Goma and elsewhere, the whole world came together against Rwanda. The whole world lined up against Rwanda: the FDLR and all the groups associated with it that have been mentioned, the Wazalendo, the Burundian forces, the FARDC, the South Africans, and many others. I would rather not spend time naming them all; there were so many. When you look at the scale of what they had assembled there and what they were up against, it is clear that what they were trying to do was wage war against Rwanda, destabilize our country, and reshape it the way they wanted. In fact, they said so themselves. Ordinarily, if someone were to say these things without evidence, you might think they were simply trying to frighten people, to intimidate them. To convince themselves that what they wanted was within reach and that they were going to achieve it, they even brought in mercenaries. You know that many of them passed through here. We gave free passage to our enemies, allowing them to leave a war they waged against us, a war that was never theirs to begin with. That alone tells you something. And it is also something for which our forces, together with others who stood with them, deserve recognition. As for Rwanda, we will always be in a struggle for our very existence. Today we're announcing $280M in Series B funding at a $2B valuation, led by our long-time investor and partner, Menlo Ventures. When we announced our Series A last May, most conversations I had about voice began with someone explaining why they doubted it. I don't have those conversations anymore. People tell me instead how much time they save talking instead of typing and what they want us to build next. In a little over a year, voice has gone from something people were questioning to something they rely on, and it happened faster than we expected. That shift is why we've raised a new round of funding. This funding represents a deeper investment in our products, lab, models, and our team. Alongside the funding, we're announcing a preview of our first proprietary speech model, Canto. Canto is a 2B parameter speech model trained for the places people actually talk: loud rooms, windy streets, a toddler in the background, a second language mixed into the first. Models like this will change how we all interact with devices, and Canto is the first in a rapid line of them. Each one will be larger and more capable than the last, and each should improve Flow's dictation in a way you can feel the day it ships. Larger speech models also open the door to the vision we dreamed up 5 years ago: using your voice as the primary way you interact with devices. That still has to be invented. A voice interface people rely on all day, in every app, doesn't exist anywhere yet. It's time for that to change.
