Met alle respect, deze top legt meer bloot dan enkel een financieringsoplossing. De EU is een duidelijke brug te ver gegaan door zelfs maar te overwegen om bevroren Russische soevereine middelen te confisqueren. Dat raakt aan fundamentele principes van internationaal recht, eigendomsrecht en soevereine immuniteit. Dat dit juridisch onhoudbaar bleek, verandert niets aan het feit dat de bereidheid om die grens te overschrijden het vertrouwen al heeft geschaad. Wat daarna volgde, is minstens even veelzeggend. De snelheid en gretigheid waarmee werd overgeschakeld naar 90 miljard euro aan gezamenlijke schuld toont vooral de wil om miljarden te blijven pompen. Niet alleen richting Oekraïne, maar ook om een systeem in stand te houden waarin Europese defensie-industrieën structureel worden gevoed met publiek geld. Dat zelfs volledige opt-outs voor drie lidstaten geen enkel probleem vormden, onderstreept dat punt. Ongelijke risicodeling werd zonder aarzelen aanvaard, zolang de geldstroom maar bleef lopen. Corruptie blijkt geen probleem. Gebrek aan transparantie evenmin. Dit is geen beleid met een doel. Dit is een systeem dat zichzelf in stand houdt, koste wat het kost. Voor een oorlog zonder exitstrategie, die intussen een veelvoud heeft gekost van wat ooit verdedigbaar was, in geld én in mensenlevens.
