You should have thought about that before admitting Southern Cyprus into the European Union. The island was already divided when the EU accepted Southern Cyprus as if it represented the whole of Cyprus. That political decision weakened the incentive for compromise and made a negotiated settlement even more difficult. It is inconsistent to complain today about a divided island after accepting it into the EU under those circumstances.

Although equal sovereignty between the two communities was established following the three treaties of 1959 and 1960, the Turkish side currently controls only 36% of the territory, while the remainder is under Greek Cypriot occupation—a fact that can be conclusively proven. Anyone reading the texts of the Treaty of Guarantee, the Treaty of Establishment, and the Treaty of Alliance concluded in 1959 and 1960 will see that it is the Greek Cypriots, not the Turks, who are the occupying force on the island of Cyprus. Today, while the Turkish side ought to possess 50% of the territory by virtue of equal sovereignty, it holds only 36% of the 9,251 square kilometers, and a portion of the remaining land is clearly under the occupation of the Greek Cypriot government in violation of international law.
