We cannot defeat evil if we are afraid to name it. That is my message to Parliament as we work to protect Australians from vile antisemitism and the threat of radical Islamist extremism. Hate does not defeat itself. Extremism does not fade on its own. Enough is enough.

Labor’s legislation is unravelling. When Labor’s own MPs privately describe it as a “sh**show”, and today’s front pages label it a shambles, Australians can see that this is a bill not fit for purpose. The Coalition has serious concerns about Labor’s clumsy attempt to deal with antisemitism and extremism. As drafted, it fails the most basic test of all. It does not clearly eradicate antisemitism, nor does it seriously confront radical Islamic extremism. Across more than 500 pages, the term “radical Islam” is not mentioned once. If the Prime Minister cannot bring himself to name the problem, he cannot be expected to solve it. Parliament can and should be able to criminalise antisemitic extremist hate preaching while upholding free speech. But when the government cannot explain how its own laws would operate, Parliament cannot support them and the community cannot have confidence in them. The Coalition will continue to scrutinise this legislation and engage constructively. On the evidence so far, however, it raises more questions than answers and appears fundamentally unsalvageable.

Islamist extremism is very often linked to antisemitism — and we need to be honest about the facts. Around 94% of terrorist murders in the UK over the past 25 years were committed by Islamist extremists. About 75% of the counter-terrorism caseload is Islamist-related. Yet Prevent’s caseload is only around 10% Islamist. That mismatch is deeply concerning. It suggests resources are not being focused where the threat is greatest. We must take a clear-eyed, evidence-led approach — tackle Islamist extremism head on, and root out antisemitism wherever it appears.

The most serious issue with Mamdani’s campaign is the extremism attached to it. We cannot stay silent in the face of any extremism. Praising Hamas, refusing to condemn calls for violence, and weakening public safety puts all New Yorkers at risk. Concern isn’t enough— we must turn that concern into action. Register, vote, and protect our city’s future.
