We cannot keep pouring an increasing amount of money into more doctors, hospitals, and medicines in the hope that we can treat our way out of our health problems. We need to look "upstream" and tackle the determinants of health. My speech in House of Lords on NHS.

If you are interested in delivering the pivot to prevention, this event should be good.

@UKHouseofLords But it's false binary distinction. The nation needs BOTH excellent preventative care, and excellent medical care. We have less beds and less clinical staff than almost any other peer country.

Absolutely. But at the moment, almost all the money is going into the hospitals, doctors, medicines and machines that go ping. It’s time that even those heroes who deal with the worst outcomes come clean - our acute services cannot treat the country into a state of healthiness. Please join me in sending that message to the decision-makers. Let’s write a joint letter?

@UKHouseofLords The primary determinant of health is poverty. Full stop.

@UKHouseofLords We certainly should be pouring a lot more money into Long Covid scientific research; one of the major reasons for the record chronic ill-health rates we're seeing right now. In 2022 the APPG on Coronavirus recommended £100million be allocated to Long Covid research *per year*.

@UKHouseofLords The pouring of £££ into non-Dr clinicians instead of actual Drs has been a huge mistake for patients & NHS as a whole Pour that £ into posts for actual qualified medics (aka Drs) & you’d see a sea-change in quality of service & outcomes There are Drs out of work No excuses

@UKHouseofLords Lord Bethell, I was wondering if you’d had a chance to read the NZ report which I shared with you last week. This report could form the blueprint for any government willing to confront the enormous health & economic challenges presented by Long Covid.

@UKHouseofLords We have all seen the reports of those who just paid you many thousands (it was private healthcare). You shouldn't be speaking about health or the NHS to anyone.

@UKHouseofLords I 100% agree we need to tackle the determinants of health… the root causes. And surely that should start by taking urgent action to reduce the rampant spread of Covid within the population, given that the long-term health implications of Covid are a main driver of the issue.
