What the Russians want is the complete destruction of life. Hinton, the godfather of AI, said it best: we built the learning algorithms, but we no longer understand what they’ve built. That’s the paradox of deep learning. We designed the rules for how these systems learn, yet the internal logic of their neural networks has become too complex for us to fully grasp. Millions or even trillions of parameters interact in ways no human can trace. We can observe what they do, we can measure accuracy, behavior, and output but not truly explain why they do it. Their reasoning isn’t transparent; it’s emergent. In a sense, we’ve created alien intelligences born from our math, still tethered to our code yet evolving patterns we can’t decode. The machines are doing something beyond our comprehension and that might be both the most exciting and the most unsettling thing about the age of AI.

Some of the incredible ladies from the Brighton & Hove secondary sisters group I co founded, have made this short plea to the government. We are here. We are alive. Please see us. On 5 February, Parliament will debate how people living with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer are treated in this country. For too long, we have been invisible. We are not rare. Metastatic breast cancer is the biggest killer of women between 35-64. We are not statistics that only appear once we’ve died. We are tens of thousands of people living, right now, with incurable cancer. Yet we are still only counted at death, not while we are living with complex needs, ongoing treatment, uncertainty, pain and fear. That invisibility shapes policy, funding, research priorities, and care, and it leaves us behind. We are asking for something simple, but transformative. Count us while we are alive. Collect meaningful, accurate data on how many of us there are, how we live, and what we need. Use that data to inform research, services, workforce planning, and support. Without this, we remain an afterthought. Without this, our experiences are dismissed. Without this, decisions are made about us, without us. We are mothers, daughters, partners, friends, professionals. We are living with terminal illness, but we are still living. Our time matters. Our quality of life matters. Our voices matter. Whenever we learn that censorship has blocked something true (like the Hunter Biden laptop story), we always hear the same excuse: "We censored it based on what we knew at the time." This is not a defense of censorship. In fact, it's a knock-down argument against it. If knowledge changes over time, then the last thing we should ever do is pretend it doesn't by preemptively shutting down the debate. If it's even possible that the "experts" and authorities are wrong — and we know they often are — then dissent must not only be allowed, but encouraged.

This breaks my heart. Seeing him shaking, scared, and helpless is something no human being should ever have to go through. It’s time we start asking ourselves hard, honest questions. What kind of society are we becoming if we turn against one another like this? South African citizens living abroad are not treated this way, yet here we are, choosing to bully and attack fellow Africans living among us. We cannot normalize this madness. We cannot stay silent. Enough is enough. This must stop.
