The Church Street bombing was a car bomb attack carried out by Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), on May 20, 1983, in Pretoria, South Africa. The bombing occurred on Church Street (now called Helen Joseph Street). It resulted in the deaths of 19 people, including the two perpetrators, and injured 217 others. The target was the South African Air Force (SAAF) headquarters, but the bomb detonated during rush hour, causing casualties among civilians as well.
