Yes. Self-love is another one I'd love to hear your thoughts on.

@tomdelasa Incomplete thought and flawed line of argumentation, IMO. If forgiveness belongs exclusively to God, then how can I be responsible to forgive others? (Matt. 6:14, Col. 3:13). Shame and guilt are tools that prevent recurring offenses and should not be easily dismissed.

@tomdelasa Your responsibility to forgive others means that you are responsible for passing on the forgiveness that God has first given to you. You are the conduit; He is the Giver.

@Jon45Solas @tomdelasa And if I’m supposed to pass on the forgiveness, that God has first given to me, then by saying “I need to forgive myself” is passing along the forgiveness that God has already given to me (assuming confession, repentance, and reconciliation already happened).

@birdchadlouis @Jon45Solas @tomdelasa If God has already forgiven you then there’s nothing to pass onto yourself, you accept it and give thanks for it. A believer shouldn’t be ashamed of sin that has been covered by the blood of Christ but this is hard for our flesh to let go of.

@backyard_pete @birdchadlouis @tomdelasa I wish we'd take a more measured approach to things like this. A key part of repentance is remorse over sin, and shame/guilt is a deterrent for repeat offenses. That doesn't mean that shame should strip our confidence, but we should always remember how bad it felt.

Go to confession - that is the way the church fathers provided. Go read the early church fathers.

Yes the primary offended person is holding forgiveness and that is God and He freely gives to those who repent. Just like if I offended a coworker, he holds forgiveness (directly) because I've offended him and (indirectly) God because my coworker is made in the image of God and is His son.

Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” CH Spurgeon said the closer we get to God, the more we see our sin, our unworthiness, but in that we see the power of the cross more fully. His mind blowing grace ❤️

I disagree. On that logic, love is also something that isn't ours and doesn't belong to us. But we are commanded by Jesus to love ourselves and also love others. Love and forgiveness go hand in hand. Therefore if I am to love myself I must also forgive myself. He says that kind of language goes against the scriptures but mentions no scriptures.

@tomdelasa Yes, you can’t acquire a debt from yourself or release yourself from a debt. It’s not a transaction that can take place in any legal sense.

It's a hard saying, but guilt for sins forgiven (truly forgiven: truly confessed, repented of and, with all effort, avoided in the future) by God is deception from satan. He wants us mired in guilt and shame, because in guilt embraced there is no hope, and w/o hope, why repent?

This unwittingly makes it sound like we don't forgive anyone and nobody forgives us because forgiveness is God's alone. This is not biblical. "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us"

When you say people don't forgive themselves, it simply means they are failing to believe and receive the forgiveness God has already provided for them.

The inner healing movement def takes it too far. But nevertheless, if a person, though forgiven by God, is holding onto bitterness, resentment and judgement towards themselves, they should bring their attitudes in line with God's, ie forgiveness of themselves. Renewing their mind

So you don’t believe you can sit against yourself according to the Bible?

When you sin against yourself, you don’t need you to forgive you. You need God’s forgiveness for it is His law you have broken, not yours.

@Jer4revival I'd add that when you are God's, and you are part of His temple, it's never really a sin against yourself. We belong to God. Every atom in our body, from the neurons and synapses in our brains, to the bacterial flora in our guts, all are His. It has all been consecrated as His.

“I want to but I just can’t believe it” “Try harder” 👍 Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves. To love ourselves implies forgiving ourselves. You don’t tell friends who are having a fight not to forgive each other because “they have God’s forgiveness”. Same idea.
