$It has taken the Labour Government an appalling six months to announce a chair for their national inquiry into the rape gangs. I’m pleased to see movement, but it has been an utter failure so far. On a fraction of the budget, our own independent rape gang inquiry has motored on - with our hearings scheduled for February. But let me be clear. I want the national inquiry to succeed. I just offered the Home Secretary a meeting to discuss how our inquiry can assist their efforts. Disappointingly, she did not accept. This is not about party politics. I don’t care about any of that. I’m not even in a national party. I want justice. That is all. Swift and brutal justice. When they announced their inquiry, I came under huge pressure to abandon our own investigation. I refused, and we ploughed on. I’m pleased that we did, because I am unsure that Labour’s efforts will deliver anything of use. Our hearings are scheduled for February, with the report due to be drafted after. Following that, we aim to rigorously pursue private prosecutions to deliver justice where the state has so spectacularly failed to do so. My offer stands. We will help the national inquiry however we can, but we will also continue our own efforts partly in order to hold this woeful Labour Government to account. Because to be entirely honest, I don’t trust them.$

Survivors have already waited too long, and a drawn-out or diluted process would be yet another betrayal. We need an inquiry with statutory powers: the ability to compel evidence, summon witnesses, and dig deep into the institutions that allowed these crimes to happen. This must include scrutiny of public officials who turned a blind eye or actively covered up abuse. If there is evidence that officials acted unlawfully particularly under the offence of misconduct in public office they must be held accountable. So while many may feel a sense of relief today, we must not mistake a reluctant U-turn for resolution. The hard work begins now.

Louise Casey's audit found "many examples of organisations avoiding the topic altogether for fear of appearing racist, raising community tensions or causing community cohesion problems" But Casey is concerned that telling the truth about the ethnicity and religion of the gangs will be "a gift to the racists." The victims were English children, the perpetrators predominantly Pakistani Muslim men. Will wanting to protect Pakistani enclaves and Islam from criticism, and politicians from being called racist, cause the inquiry to avoid asking uncomfortable questions? Labour MPs like Bell Ribeiro-Addy, Naz Shah, and the Home Secretary are already obfuscating the facts: blaming "all ethnicities and communities" and "closed patriarchal groups of men". It was in Labour-led Telford where I was asked by a CSE detective if I had “consented to sexual activity” at any point. It was local Labour politicians that called Pakistani-Muslim grooming gang survivors “paki shaggers” and “white slags”. It was in Labour-run Rochdale and Rotherham where local services turned little girls away and handed them straight back to their abusers because they didn’t want to be called racist. Labour councils. Labour politicians. Labour councillors. Labour-led local authorities. Labour-controlled police forces. So long as Labour is the sole leader of the National Grooming Gangs Inquiry, there is no chance of justice or change. The appointment of a Labour Peer with no legal experience to chair an investigation into the worst legal and systemic failure this country has ever seen? It’s a farce. Labour cannot be the face of justice. Not when they were the architects of the very atrocities we are fighting to expose. Nothing will change, nothing will get better, and we will be letting Labour mark their own homework and sweep their corruption under the rug with the veneer of an “impartial inquiry”. The only way the inquiry stands a chance of succeeding is if Reform, the Tories, survivors, apolitical experts, whistleblowers and legal professionals are given a seat at the table.
