We don’t talk about this enough: State-Owned Enterprises are supposed to generate revenue for South Africa — not pull from the fiscus every year. Right now, they’re costing us more than they contribute. #BudgetSpeech2025 #BudgetSpeech

Apparently even so, we still can’t hold them accountable because of unemployment numbers.

My sister companies who's main function was to make a loss to ensure South Africa and it's people can afford to live in the country are supposed to cost fiscus. Eskom, Transnet and PRASA help subsidise the country. Until all can afford! They'll take from fiscus

My brother @Mokhwibitxwane - no-one disputes the need for public goods or cross-subsidisation. But let’s not romanticise dysfunction. Subsidising commuters is not the same as bankrupting the state. Eskom, Transnet, and PRASA weren’t designed to make losses, they were designed to cover costs, fund maintenance, and expand access sustainably. The problem isn’t that they support the public, it’s that they now extract from the fiscus without delivering public value.

That's not what they were meant for. They were supposed to self-sustain, making it cheaper for the private sector to generate wealth, they then pay for these UTILITIES. If government generates a profit, you turn the country into a chicken coop.

Gov is pathetic. They make losses from SOE whilst at the same time these entities operate as monopolies in their sectors. It’s unbelievable how inefficient they can run things!

The primary focus of an SOE shouldn't be revenue, it should be services. Oddly the ANC have failed at both. The SOEs are regulated monopolies and there's a chance that free market in those makrkets would generate more (tax) revenue than SOE revenue, we sacrifice that for services

Its such a pity we have this calibre of politicians. SOE’s are not created for generating income for the state. Please madam learn before spewing nonsense.

It’s because, politicians are playing engineer whereas as getting engineers working to turn around SoE’s. Even SABC it should be treated as a media , technology & platform company headed by a telecom/microwave /electronic engr

SARB is an SOE go ask what them do with their profits first then you will know what should happen with the rest...

They should be directed to the National Revenue Fund, as should “the rest”.
