President Macron called on India to support a moratorium on strikes against civilian targets in Russia’s war against Ukraine. "We must act to bring an end to Russia’s war of aggression and establish a just and lasting peace in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter. As South Africa, we hold the firm view that the attack on civilians in Israel, the ongoing siege of Gaza and the decision to forcibly move the people of Gaza, together with the indiscriminate use of force through bombing, are violations of international law. More than that, these acts are an affront to our common humanity. We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages, the lifting of the siege of Gaza, opening of humanitarian corridors and the urgent provision of humanitarian aid on the required scale to the people of Gaza. We also call for a United Nations-led negotiation process towards resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israelis and Palestinians will only live in lasting peace, security, and dignity when they live side by side in two sovereign and independent states, with mutually recognized borders and full regional integration, as outlined in the New York Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2803. But these are only words on paper if we do not deliver. It’s high time to take decisive action. The quest for peace, stability and justice in the Middle East needs our United Nations and requires every Member State to walk the talk: to engage in this process, to uphold the UN Charter, to adhere to international law, and the promise this institution made to all the people of the world eighty years ago.

On this United Nations Day, it’s crucial to emphasize that the world must not forget the goals and principles of the UN Charter and the reason this organization was created. Even though some of its officials may choose the temptations of Kazan over the substance of the UN Charter, the world remains structured in such a way that the rights of nations and the norms of international law will always matter. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine in this.
