💫💫"1979" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins, written by Billy Corgan and released in January 1996 as the second single from Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness (1995). 💫💫The song originated from an early drum loop demo that Corgan initially disliked but was later reworked into a minimalist track inspired by suburban teenage life. The title refers to Corgan's youth (he was 12 years old in 1979), although the lyrics aren't about the year.

“Firestarter” began as a finished instrumental, with Liam Howlett planning to leave it that way. After hearing the track in the studio, Keith Flint asked if he could try writing and recording a vocal for it. His snarling performance transformed both the song and his place within The Prodigy, turning the group’s on-stage dancer into its most recognisable frontman. Later included on The Fat of the Land, the track pushed electronic music into the mainstream without softening its aggression. At Pinkpop in 1996, that transformation is already complete.
