I survived a murder/suidide attempt by my mother in the winter of ‘72, when I was 7, going on 8. Luckily, she changed her mind after overdosing me and leaving me to die. It was the second time I had to be resuscitated while in her custody. Her self inflicted death would come two and a half years later, but not until after she kidnapped me from my grandmother’s and had me thrown into the foster care system to keep my father from getting custody; bad to worse, to worse yet. These events occurred in Vancouver. She was a genius, which was harder for women in those days, and held very progressive views. She was also very religious, teaching Sunday School within the Anglican Church of Canada, which was also very progressive for the time. As a librarian at UBC, she was involved with the founding of Greenpeace, and exposed to their politically extremist views. Her adult life was marked by a series of unsuccessful, and in some cases, very bad, abusive relationships with men. She was very close with her father, who died when I was 2, and would become increasingly estranged from her mother, who she judged harshly for the state of her parents’ marriage, and a late coming third child, tens year my senior, who would get knocked up at 17 by an American draft dodger. I was a struggle for her, being her equal in intelligence, also having undiagnosed sensory processing disorders as a result of near fatal bacterial cerebral meningitis when I was 2, ADHD, and high functioning autism. I received a lot of spankings, and a father figure in my life at that age would have done me, and her, a lot of good. She was medicated. I don’t know on what during that time, though I know she was at least on the sleeping pills she forced on me, but I do know what she combined with alcohol a couple of years later, leading to her death. There’s a profile that appears, but with four key differences; the oppression women experience today is in their minds; spirituality and most modern Christian churches have been stripped of any masculine identity and qualities, so that not only have women lost the possibility of real relationships with men, more importantly, they have rejected and lost that most meaningful masculine relationship, the one with God; as many point out, the ubiquitous presence of social media echo chamber/bubble provides rapid transmission of mental illness; and most damaging, our society has become awash in SSRIs. Those who dismiss the overriding influence of SSRIs, and the always accompanying drug cocktails, are speaking out of their asses. Science has largely disproved the brain “chemical imbalance” theory that drove the creation of these drugs, so you are dealing with severely altered brain functioning when on these medications. I know first hand, having been misdiagnosed and placed on three different SSRIs in three years, and being prescribed even more medications, to deal with the side effects, at one point being on 13 at a time. After three plus years of working with me, my psychiatrist finally figured out that I was describing ADHD and ASD, and wasn’t suffering so much from PTSD. Three years that destroyed my life. The mental and physical side effects from all these drugs were so extreme, he pulled me off of three or four meds cold-turkey, and combined with the improper tapering between new SSRIs, the withdrawal took years. This shit is real. This shit is f’ed up. You have been respectful and refrained from rage bait around this issue, which is why I share this here. Ultimately, these are family issues, that are a result of societal decay, not family issues driving the decay; rage bait, for or against, is the same decay. Take care of your own 🤙

It's not "mental health." It's women being women, unchecked by their significant others, families, community, or society at large. Calling it a mental health issue is just another way of deflecting responsibility. These women need to be held accountable, not held like little babies.
