We need a 15-year K-12 public education equalization plan. We need a deficit reduction plan built over 10 to 15 years. Instead what we have are two-minute cable news plans where everyone bashes each other before the next commercial break. Politicians running on two-year cycles, four-year cycles. Nothing transformative gets built in those windows. What this country needs is somebody who walks up to a microphone and says — here is the problem, here are the solutions, and you're not going to like them. But we're doing it anyway because the alternative is worse. It's not a popular message, but I think if the right person delivered it with enough honesty and conviction, you could build a real movement around it. People making short-term sacrifices for the long-term good of the country. It's happened before. It can happen again. We just need someone brave enough to act.
