🤨 Jake Richards, the Sentencing Minister, just went on BBC Breakfast and defended releasing two of the men who killed PC Andrew Harper early. His line: “The government have to draw a line at some point because if we don’t, we risk having a prison system in collapse. We will not shy away from making difficult decisions because it’s the right thing to do.” 😡 No! It is categorically NOT the right thing to do! Letting them out early under a prison overcrowding scheme is a national disgrace. Harper’s mother has called it devastating. Police colleagues are threatening legal action. And the government shrugs and says “nothing we can do”. Absolute rubbish. There is something you can do: • Prioritise releasing genuine non-violent offenders first. • There are thousands of people in prison for lower-level or “miscellaneous” offences (perjury and similar). Start there. • There are roughly 10,000 foreign national offenders in our prisons. Deport them. That frees space without putting the killers of a police officer back on the streets early. This is not an inevitable “difficult decision”. It is a choice. Labour is choosing the path of least resistance and calling it courage. Releasing the killers of a serving police officer while claiming your hands are tied is inexcusable. It is a failure of priorities and a betrayal of the public’s most basic expectation of justice. These two should never have been eligible. Reverse it. Block the early release. Do the actual right thing.

A police federation has threatened legal action over plans to allow the killers of PC Andrew Harper to be freed halfway through their sentences, as part of the early release scheme. PC Harper was killed in August 2019 by Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers when he responded to a quad bike theft. The Government announced on Monday that some crimes would exempt prisoners from early release, including rape and grooming gang offences, but Cole and Bowers still remain eligible with their convictions of manslaughter. Thames Valley Police Federation has threatened to take the Government to court to prevent their release.
