After being delayed in Portsmouth due to many shipping movements Waverley’s speed was increased to make up a little of the lost time. Her engineers captured her steam engine at an increased speed. Waverley’s main engine normally operates at 42rpm. Waverley’s engine, number 520, was built in Greenock in 1946 and installed in the ship in early 1947 before her maiden voyage on Monday 16th June 1947. The engine is open to view for passengers and continues to impress young and old as it drives the ship’s massive feathering paddle wheels.
