Muslims are involved as both perpetrators (Assad’s Alawite-led regime, Sunni rebel groups, ISIS) and victims (mostly Sunni civilians). External actors like Russia and the U.S.-led coalition also contributed significantly to the death toll. •Yemen: 400,000 (2014-2025, extrapolated from UN Development Programme’s 377,000 by 2022). Houthi rebels (Shia Muslims) and the Yemeni government (Sunni-majority) fight, while the Saudi-led coalition (Sunni) bombs civilians. Most victims are Muslim, with foreign powers like Iran (backing Houthis) and the U.S. (arming Saudis) escalating the conflict. •Afghanistan: 243,000 (2001-2021, Watson Institute estimate). The Taliban (Sunni Muslims) and Afghan forces (mostly Muslim) clashed with U.S./NATO forces.
