Arianna Sofia Veraza, a one-year-old, and her parents were driving to Sam's Club for milk, eggs and diapers yesterday when they heard helicopters and horns blaring yesterday. They had turned around to leave when a federal agent pepper-sprayed them through a car window. They were not protesting. DHS didn’t address the Veraza family’s run-in in a statement, only saying that people “stalked” the federal convoy into the Sam’s Club parking lot and that one Border Patrol vehicle was rammed during that confrontation. According to the statement, agents arrested 9 people, 8 of whom were U.S citizens, over the course of the morning in Little Village and Cicero. This is in the police bus that hauled us off when we were arrested. We sang. And laughed. And refused to let the weariness and violence overwhelm us. Joy is an act of resistance. [With handcuffs on, I managed to get my phone out of my pocket and record this little video inside the bus. My pal Ben Cohen (co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s) was also arrested, and was pretty impressed by my Houdini-style maneuver.] Keep singing. Keep laughing. Keep shining in the darkness. Good morning to everyone in Massachusetts who agrees with Senator Warren’s honest admission that Democrats are no longer trusted by working Americans. When Warren says, “Once, we were trusted by working people,” that should be a wake-up call, not a throwaway line. Trust isn’t lost overnight. It’s lost when families feel squeezed by rising costs, when policies sound good on paper but make daily life harder, and when elected officials seem more focused on ideology than results. Working people want affordability, accountability, and common sense. They want a government that listens, respects their paycheck, and understands that every new program, mandate, or tax comes out of their pocket. At this point, even Democrats are saying the quiet part out loud. When their own representatives admit they’ve lost the trust of working Americans, it’s hard to deny that their policies have failed the people they claim to represent.
