— Mark 6:4 He uses the standard proverb about prophets and applies it to himself. 2. Jesus shows he’s sent with a message, not the source of it a) “My teaching is not mine” “My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me.”
— John 7:16 That’s exactly the language of a prophet: message from the One who sent him. b) He doesn’t speak from himself In the same passage: “If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.”
— John 7:17 So: •God = source •Jesus = messenger delivering that teaching. 3. Jesus prays to God If he is literally the same Being as the One he prays to, this becomes very hard to make sense of in simple language. a) Regular prayer The Gospels repeatedly show Jesus withdrawing to pray: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”
— Luke 5:16 b) Long supplication in John 17 “After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you…’”
— John 17:1 He is: •Looking to heaven •Addressing the Father as another •Asking, begging — classic prophetic relation: servant → Lord. Prophets pray to God. God does not pray to God. 4. Jesus clearly distinguishes himself from the Father / God a) “The Father is greater than I” “…I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.”
— John 14:28 Very simple: one is greater, one is lesser → hierarchy, not equality. b) He doesn’t know what the Father knows “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
— Matthew 24:36 So: •Father = has knowledge of the Hour •Son = does not have it An all-knowing God vs a limited-knowing servant → fits prophet, not God. 5. Jesus’ will is subordinate to God’s will a) “Not my will but Yours” “…he fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’”
— Matthew 26:39 That’s exactly the submission of a prophet: •He has a human will (he doesn’t want suffering) •He submits it to the will of the One above him. b) “I came not to do my own will” “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my will but the will of Him who sent me.”
— John 6:38 Again: sent, submitting to Higher Will → prophetic role. 6. Jesus pushes all glory back to the One who sent him Jesus literally gives the classic criterion of a true messenger: “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him is true, and in him there is no unrighteousness.”
— John 7:18 He is: •Not speaking from himself •Seeking God’s glory •Calling that pattern “true” That’s exactly what Muslims say about prophets — including Jesus.
