As online harms intensify, children are particularly at risk. To better protect them, our government has introduced the Safe Social Media Act, which will make social media services and AI chatbot services safer for children. The bill, if passed, would require social media services and AI chatbot services to identify, mitigate, and address risks of harm on their platforms, and to develop services that are safe by design and put the safety of children first. It would also prevent Canadians under 16 from having accounts on social media services, while providing a process for social media platforms to seek an exemption if they can demonstrate that they have put in place a sufficient set of protections for children. This law is about holding platforms accountable and ensuring they have protections in place to keep children safe online, reduce harm before it happens, and ensure that digital spaces are safe by design all while protecting the privacy of Canadians.

Nothing else matters unless our kids are safe. So we acted immediately. What happened at Darwin School should never happen. This child did everything right. Her parents did everything right too. Students - you are safe at school. Parents - your kids are safe to be sent to school. Educators - we’ve got your backs and will protect you too. We released new dollars today so every school division can review their safety plans and do what needs to be done in light of the recent incident. We will keep working with communities, staff, and law enforcement to ensure kids are safe in Manitoba as well as every single school in our province.

You can be at home, minding your own business and still, danger can find its way to your doorstep. That’s not the way life is meant to be. At some point, we must stop and take a hard look at where we are. This isn't the future we were promised. We need to acknowledge what’s gone wrong, and we need to act, urgently, to make it right. We must bring back safety. Safety at home. Safety on the streets. Safety in our schools. Progress means nothing if we can't protect the most basic human right: to feel safe. I want to live in peace and harmony, not fear and harm. And I know I’m not alone.
