Great dad. My mom taught me that. Not by her words but by her actions. Came from Cuba to US - from a life of wealth to a life of poverty. She divorced my dad a few years later for gambling and cheating. Single mom barely speaking English, worked her way up. Never complained. We never in our youth felt we lacked anything. She died a millionaire - financially and spiritually. At home with her family. Amazing woman. She taught me to be a strong independent woman. I miss her.

I could only wish for a father that would have this conversation with me when I was young. To be shown this much love and honesty. Now I am old, but had to learn it all on my own. Fathers, be like this man. Talk to your children, like this man.

I wished every boy could have a real dad in their lives. The world would be a different place.

He once shared that he had dreamed of becoming a judge but was told he was “too black and white.” “You’ll never get elected... You’re not gray enough. They know you won’t play ball.” A few years ago, I met an older man who had been a young lawyer working under him in the prosecutor’s office. When he learned who I was, he said with deep respect, “Your father was the most honest man I’ve ever known. Terrifying, but honest.” He was faithful — never missing Mass — and loved my mother to the point of self-sacrifice. They stood united. Even when she was wrong, he would never undermine her or allow anyone else to disrespect her. He was a hard-working man who loved knowledge and didn’t shy away from being either the student or the teacher. During the first twelve years of my life, he was a full-time father and farmer while also working as a prosecutor, chief of warrants, serving as the elected township supervisor, and volunteering in several community groups. He wasn’t flawless. He carried his own wounds. But he was someone you could 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗦𝗧 — a man who 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗗 the vulnerable and 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗗 without hesitation. He poured himself out for those he loved. He was generous with strangers, kind to animals, and gentle with babies — yet woe to anyone who did wrong. He was a 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻.

The father was raised in a dysfunctional family of origin. He’s trying to help his son from experiencing disappointment and getting hurt. The dad is underestimating the importance of a supportive network of family and friends, which is CRITICAL, because we all have limitations and need support from others, at some point, whatever that might be.
