We now support overlap selection mode. Should we make it the default?

Yes.

Please don't make it the default. It's way easier to exclude some objects the way it is right now. You got more control like this.

@ImBiox That was the main argument for the wrap selection mode from day one, although we're now unsure if it overweighs the downsides. Note that you can use cmd/ctrl+drag to select nested elements in either selection mode.

Right, considering the cmd/ctrl+drag, you'd still have the granularity. Idk, advanced users probably like the wrap selection mode. What behavior users expect from an action like this is also something to consider.

just do left to right overlap, right to left any intersection. this is how every proper drafting app does it (Rhino, CAD etc.)

You can add a shortcut. Oh, Shift + drag, Ctrl + drag, Alt + drag are all used.

Love this!! Much prefer overlap to wrap in most cases. Need a hotkey to switch it.

@Vjeux Yes please this is how I expect selection to work in modern apps

replicate what CAD apps do, one behaviour left to right: overlap and another right to left: wrap, with different background colors for the selection rectangle

Lightburn's drag-selection modes nailed it: Enclosing Select (left-to-right, red box) selects only items fully inside the box, while Crossing Select (right-to-left, green box) selects anything the box touches. Check it out, includes gifs of how it works:

SketchUp does a thing where if you draw your selection box from left-to-right it's previous Excalidraw behavior, and if you draw from right-to-left, it's overlap mode.
