We often underestimate how difficult pidgin English is to foreigners. It should be part of our national language. Almost every Nigerian speaks pidgin.

Pigeon English should be used as our national generally acceptable language instead of The division of I am Yoruba or I am Igbo or I am Hausa but I am a Nigerian.

Someone asked me on Friday how many Nigerian languages I speak, given the numerous dialects in Nigeria. I replied confidently that I speak two Nigerian languages: Yoruba and Pidgin English. I truly believe that we should consider making Pidgin a national language, possibly even above English.

Typically west Africans like Ghanaians will understand our pidgin English. But the rest of the world doesn’t. It sounds so strange to them.

“Pour you spit for eye” makes sense? It makes no sense to a non Nigerian.

It should be our main language. Every powerful country in the world has one of two major languages. American recently made English their official language. So they can understand and get along better. A nation of over 200m needs a language everyone of them can speak fluently
