We partnered with Planet to send a prototype satellite carrying four TPUs into orbit. We’ll be looking to see how well the TPUs withstand the harsh conditions of space to assess whether we can eventually host machine learning in orbit.

We’re sending TPUs to space (yes, really). After years of research, we’re launching a satellite to evaluate if and how Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) hold up in orbit. The test mission, as part of our latest moonshot — Project Suncatcher — is designed to gather data exploring how we can one day host machine learning infrastructure in space.

🇨🇳 China has launched nine computing satellites into orbit. A Kinetica-1 rocket from CAS Space launched from the Jiuquan launch site and placed several satellites, including the Chaozhisuan-1, into a sun-synchronous orbit. This satellite serves as a technology demonstrator for a future orbital computing constellation. The satellite is equipped with powerful computing resources and laser communication capabilities. It will be able to process data directly in orbit, receive "raw" data from other satellites, and transmit the results to Earth.

“If you want satellites that can confidently spot really tiny wildfires, you can build a really big, expensive, high-resolution satellite that stares at the ground for a long time. Or you use smaller, lower-cost satellites — meaning you can launch a lot more of them — but you have to make up the precision difference with machine learning and AI. We chose the latter,” says Google Research scientist, Chris Van Arsdale. We spoke with Chris about our FireSat initiative and how we’re using AI to detect and track wildfires.

There are two ways to improve space access: 1. kg to orbit - make it cheap to put more up 2. m3 in orbit - compile matter on top of Earth’s gravity well For the latter, satellites and compute don’t need to be overbuilt to survive a strenuous launch. 10x better mass efficiency.

The "Neoclouds are too scared of Jensen to offer TPUs!" tweet reminded me of this quote from the Odd Lots episode with Hudson River Trading's Head of AI: "If you're using TPUs, you're also kind of entering a very close relationship with Google, some feeling of vendor lock in.. It's a complicated thing if you go down that path. But if you're compute hungry like the big labs, you'll take what you can get. I think Anthropic takes TPUs, Trainium, and GPUs, they need them all." You can also just look at the hoops and hurdles Google is going through to find external buyers of TPUs: - Invested $10B+ in Anthropic (and committed to invest $40B+) - Back-stopped Anthropic's data center leases so that Anthropic's data center developers can obtain financing to house the TPU's Anthropic is buying from Google - Created a new neocloud via a JV with Blackstone to offer TPUs (e.g. buy them from Google to rent) CoreWeave and Nebius are already sold out on the GPUs for which they have data center capacity to bring online.. Both want to diversify their customer bases away from hyperscalers and large AI labs. Doesn't seem to make any sense for them to offer TPUs, when Anthropic is the only company actually buying TPUs from Google, and only after being heavily incentivized to do so. $GOOG $CRWV $NBIS
