So then why is it that Australians are so much better travelled than Americans?

That’s crazy. It takes longer than 45 minutes to travel the length of Houston.

The US is about 3.8 million sq miles & ALL of Europe is 3.9 million. Of that about 1.5 million is the European portion of Russia. The US has 50 states to Europes 44 countries. I live in the Midwest and it’s 14 or more hours to drive to the to the Gulf of America or Atlantic coast

I had this conversation in the 1970s with a couple of Swiss Marxists who wondered why we didn’t vote on every bill like a true democracy. They were taking a bus tour across the US. I told them to get back to me after they got through TX, not just to NYC. They wrote, “Never mind. We understand why you don’t speak foreign languages now or vote on everything.”

We live in MN. Had an exchange student one summer who was mad we wouldn't drive him to see Disney in FL. He thought it was an hour or two away.

Every single state in america is like it's own country. YEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! That's how it was supposed to be. We are supposed to be separate states loosely united for big things like defense. "America" as it is now is not what the founders designed.

I'm going on a road trip next month. It's a 12 hour drive, one way. I'll see 5 states. And I see that as a short trip.

Y'all have to remember one of the reasons Americans don't travel is we are mostly descended from every Christian country in Europe. Those people brought their culture with them and integrated it to form one country with many different themes. Even our cities are multicultural. I could have NY style pizza for lunch in Dallas and then fly down to San Antonio for authentic Tex-Mex, then have lunch there at one of the best BBQ places in the country. The next day I could drive up to New Braunfels for Chinese or German, or down to Corpus Christi for seafood. Why bother going to other countries when it's all here?

Hehe. I used to drive 45 minutes just to get to work in the same county I live in. Takes 4 hours to go visit my mother who lives in the same state I live in.

Where I get groceries is 45 mins from my house. Just thinking about Europe makes me feel claustrophobic.

Meanwhile Australia is nearly the same size, except most states are more or less the same. Can fly for 8 hours and it's kind of the same shit, just more or less buildings. My state of Western Australia is 4 times bigger than Texas.... to be fair its mostly empty though

Yes growing up I alway thought you guys had states and was part of Europe. Come to find out. Those are countries and their small. Many smaller then most states. One of those things. You need to see someone’s perspective to understand.

You can visit completely different ecosystems from state to state! California being an example of multiple ecosystems in ONE state!

Yes indeed And just driving across Texas takes 2 days. Or so it seems. One state has everything from lakes and rivers, forests, mountains and snow all in different areas - like a one stop vacation pick. Too bad the gov there is hellbent on its destruction.

The distance between San fransisco and DC is roughly equal to the distance between Lisbon and Moscow. The average US State (excluding Alaska) is 1.5X bigger than the average European country (excluding Russia).

It's a cliche, but it's true: Europeans think 100 miles is a long way. Americans think 100 years is a long time.

I never been to Switzerland but i know where it is. Nwver been to 90% of other countries but i know about them and i know where 60% of them are EXACTLY and the rest in a small radius. Travel has nothing to do with education.

My brother and I did a marathon drive from California to the East Coast. 55 hours driving straight through, taking turns driving and sleeping. We drove 4,000 miles in a straight line across the country & only went through 8 states. The US is huge.

Go for a drive in Australia then discuss travelling in a big country. I live & work in Sydney, it is a 35 minute drive to work, only 8 roads, from my house. the US, like the bald eagle, is only medium size

You're bang on, and I can recommend travelling the US in an RV. Landscapes in the south west are breathtaking, and the people were just great. Very kind, always ready to help, and I really enjoyed how easy it was to have a chat.

if you’re in a car going the speed limit it’s going to take you almost a week to go from florida to alaska with driving through canada and you still won’t reach hawaii by car. that’s how big america is.
