For context, is he referring to the fact that they came on student visas but Elon stopped school because he wanted to take the chance to take advantage of the internet boom? Technically then yes, if it were an F1 visa that is illegal. You can’t just “stop going to school” unless approved by immigration which would only approve it if you transfer to another school. I’m not sure if this is his circumstance but I don’t think he got his green card until years later. I’m glad it worked out for him, but it is an example of how being an “illegal immigrant” is ok for some but not ok for others.
