Kamala Harris should start by banning the assault weapons that her Secret Service uses. Also, what are “assault weapons”? A knife? A fork? A spoon? California has the most mass shoótings in the U.S. despite having the strictest gun laws. Maybe address violent criminals?

As a nation we cannot accept gun violence as a normal part of American life. Far too many families and communities have been left grieving because of repeated but preventable tragedies. I refuse to accept the status quo. Congress must act – ban assault weapons, strengthen background checks and red flag laws, and stop gun trafficking across state lines. We can, and must, do better for our kids and our communities.

5 years ago, Jonathan Brostoff used his platform as a member of the Speaker's Task Force on Suicide Prevention to make an impassioned plea for gun reform, including waiting periods for gun purchases, a red flag law, and universal background checks. To honor his legacy, I will do all I can to make these reforms a reality in Wisconsin. We can't afford to keep losing loved ones to gun violence.
