September 11th was a day that united a nation. Americans joined together to fight a common enemy. The day brought injury and death to American citizens, and we sent our finest to the farthest parts of the earth in the pursuit of justice. Today we remember the loss of life that occurred on 9/11. We remember the men and women who perished during the most senseless and violent attacks on US soil. We also remember the lives lost as a result of that day. We remember the EMS personnel who succumbed to their injuries days, weeks and years later sustained during that day. We remember the service members and intelligence officers who died in the wars that followed the attack. We remember the civilians who deployed and died in the support of the wars. We remember the service members who took their lives as a result of the experience of war. Today we want to not only remember and honor those who died on 9/11, but everyone who fought and died as a result of that fateful day. We as a nation will never forget.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution, officially adopting the Stars and Stripes as the flag of our nation. The American flag is recognized across the world as a symbol of freedom. And we never forget the cost- that flag was built by the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for our liberty. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we seek to follow the Master’s example as we mourn with those who mourn and comfort those who stand in need of comfort. As I visited earlier this week with survivors of the California wildfires, I was impressed by their faith and their goodness. Despite their own trials, they have continued to diligently look for opportunities to love and serve one another. We plead to heaven for all those around the world who are affected by tragedies. May we all feel God’s love and find the comfort we seek.
