Will Rahul Gandhi condemn the police action by the government he supports? Are the students of Jharkhand any less deserving of justice? Student rights cannot depend on which party is in power. Justice cannot be selective.

Before this, there has been a farmers’ movement, the anti-CAA protests, and several other protest mobilisations by workers, Dalits, and adivasi communities. Yesterday, I called out Rahul Gandhi over the way protesters were beaten in Jharkhand. I even called him a hypocrite. But moments later, he held a press conference and posted on X, openly criticising the action against the protesters. By doing so, Rahul stood against a state government led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, where Congress is an alliance partner. That is rare in Indian politics. How often do we see an ally publicly call out its own coalition government? This is what, to me, gives Rahul Gandhi his moral clarity. He has shown it time and again. The BJP is now protesting against Rahul in Parliament and demanding that he apologise for the Jharkhand incident. They want Rahul to take accountability, even though he is not the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. His party is merely an alliance partner in the state. Yet where is the accountability from Narendra Modi or Amit Shah for the brutal crackdown on students during the Delhi protest on July 28? On one side, you have Rahul Gandhi publicly criticising an ally’s government when he believes it has acted wrongly. On the other, you have a Prime Minister who expects protesters to apologise to him because some of them used abusive language against him. That is the difference.

We received an invitation from the govt for a delegation meeting, and our first round of talks with the govt delegation concluded yesterday, during which we presented our demands in detail and with logical reasoning, specifically, which exams we are demanding be cancelled and the reasons why, we are demanding a CBI investigation and why we are calling for reforms. The govt delegation listened to our demands very carefully and stated that they would place them before the Chief Minister for consideration and invite us for a second round of talks... what we have witnessed from the government's side today has left us very upset... look at the game the government is playing: today, they accepted memoranda from about 6-7 other organizations. Why are they doing this... What is their intention?... Why are they taking memoranda from NSUI? NSUI is the Congress student wing. What kind of demands would they make? Why are they not on the street protesting against the govt?.. The government is playing games, trying to fragment this movement into 2-3 different factions..." He adds, "All the students of Jharkhand stand united on a single platform... The government must accept our legitimate demands as soon as possible; otherwise, for the 'Vidhan Sabha March' we have announced for the 10th, 50,000-100,000 students from across Jharkhand will arrive, and that protest will be decisive. This is what we want to convey to the government... Accountability must be fixed that day, and you will have to officially endorse our demands..."

When you hear responses like this from the protesters, you know how genuine their protest is: Reporter: “You guys are raising slogans against the government.” Protester: “We are not raising slogans against the government.
