#WATCH | JPSC-JSSC aspirants' protest | Ranchi, Jharkhand: Student leader Ravindra Paswan says, "Today, we are changing the course of our movement. We have had enough of Gandhian methods and peaceful protests. They simply aren't listening. We are now going to adopt the path of Bhagat Singh. We are prepared to face bullets, even if the government shoots us in the chest, for this cause. We will continue our agitation until our demands are met. We are issuing an ultimatum to the government: meet our demands by the 18th. Cancel the JSSC results, scrap all exams conducted by the TDPL agency, and order a CBI inquiry into all of them. If this is not done, lakhs of students and youths from Jharkhand will lay siege to the Chief Minister's residence on the 20th... the effigy burning is scheduled for tomorrow. We are going to burn the effigies of the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government, Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself, Rahul Gandhi, and all the parties supporting them."

Is Rahul Gandhi’s concern for students limited only to protests against the Central Government? Today, students in Jharkhand demanding fair examinations were met with lathis and water cannons. Will Rahul Gandhi condemn the police action by the government he supports? Are the students of Jharkhand any less deserving of justice? Student rights cannot depend on which party is in power. Justice cannot be selective.

Here is a video showing Zemene Kassie traveling from Asmara to Mekelle five days ago. As I have said before, he was disguised and mixed in with civilian vehicles. This should serve as a lesson for the federal government to act next time. The Ethiopian government must issue a warning that, from now on, anyone crossing the border from Eritrea into Ethiopia will be treated as an enemy combatant. Once that warning has been issued, the government should use drone strikes against vehicles crossing the border from Eritrea.

The student protest at Jantar Mantar against endemic exam paper leaks is not the first show of mass dissent against the Narendra Modi government. Before this, there has been a farmers’ movement, the anti-CAA protests, and several other protest mobilisations by workers, Dalits, and adivasi communities. The government has weathered all of these protests comfortably. In this edition of In Focus episode G Sampath and Saroj Giri discuss the big question: is the students’ movement different? Is it a political challenge unlike any that the Modi government has faced during its 12 years in power? Watch the full episode here:
