Alan Milburn’s revealed over the weekend that we currently spend £25 keeping young people on benefits for every £1 helping them get into work. We clearly need to shift the dial to prioritise helping the nearly 1m NEETs into work. This is a point I made last week in the in the House of Lords. It is a pity that the King’s Speech didn’t include legislation to address this – the crisis won’t be solved through tweaks alone.

Our job was to get hundreds of guys—who had disagreements on a variety of issues—to all work together toward a common cause. We’d encounter wealthy real estate developers who barked about efficiency while paying themselves more and more—guys who thought none of the rules applied to them, thought they were big shots, and said things like, “You’re fired.” So we’ve dealt with the Donald Trump playbook before. But on those construction sites, we could say, “Look, we might disagree on this issue or that one, but we can all work together to win a race.” And that’s what we were able to build in the labor movement—that’s what we were able to build on construction sites and shop floors across the country. And that’s what I think we need to be able to do as a Democratic Party: to say, “Yes, there are social issues that impact us all, and we should stand firmly for the rights of everyday, vulnerable people.” But the way we win back the trust of the overwhelming number of people is by focusing on what brings us all together—and that’s the pocketbook issue.

We sign a contract with them that compels Ukraine to do certain things and one of things is to sell most of its assets for cash, including its farmland. The strategy that allows them to get away with it is they keep us all at each others throats. Blacks against whites, Republicans against Democrats, Rural people against urban people. When the rulers of the castle, the king and queen look over the castle wall at the top and see all of their subjects fighting they go back to the dining room and they open champagne and they toast to each other. Because as long as we are all fighting each other we can't see what they are doing. It's like someone who is jangling keys. Look at these keys. And over here they are robbing the bank and nobody is watching them. I have my eye on them. When I get into that office the payday is going to be over for Blackrock and Vanguard."
