The sides are divided by fundamental differences that Washington simply chooses to ignore. Russia demands Ukraine’s surrender. Ukraine refuses. And the U.S. keeps talking about the business deals that would come someday after. A “breakthrough” in this situation is highly unlikely. Russia will not abandon its unrealistic demands unless it is forced to. The path forward is: arm Ukraine, tighten sanctions, and seize the shadow fleet.
