The city was burned during Alexander the Great’s conquest in 330 BCE, but its ruins still reflect the scale and organization of one of the ancient world’s largest empires. 🚨 Persepolis: The Magnificent Ceremonial Heart of the Ancient Persian Empire Around 518 BCE, Darius I founded Persepolis as the ceremonial capital of the mighty Achaemenid Persian Empire. This wasn’t an ordinary city — it was a grand, purpose-built complex on a massive terrace, designed for royal ceremonies, receiving tributes, and showcasing imperial power. The stunning stone reliefs still visible today depict delegations from every corner of the vast empire — from Egypt to India — bringing gifts and paying homage, a powerful symbol of Persia’s administrative genius and remarkable cultural diversity. In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great captured and burned the city during his conquest, yet the majestic ruins that remain continue to awe visitors with their scale, precision engineering, and artistic mastery. A UNESCO World Heritage Site today, Persepolis stands as a timeless testament to one of history’s greatest empires. 👀 Which ancient wonder impresses you more — Persepolis or the Pyramids? Persepolis, founded by Darius I around 518 BCE, served as the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Built as a planned complex for royal events and tributes rather than daily living, its famous reliefs illustrate the empire’s vast reach and multiculturalism. Destroyed by fire during Alexander the Great’s conquest in 330 BCE, the ruins remain one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the ancient world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additional Historical Context & Key Facts •Location: Near modern-day Shiraz in southwestern Iran, on a large artificial terrace at the foot of Kuh-e Rahmat (Mountain of Mercy). •Purpose: Unlike typical cities, Persepolis focused on imperial display. Key structures include the Apadana (audience hall), Gate of All Nations, and various palaces. •Art & Architecture: The site blends influences from across the empire (Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, etc.), showcasing Persian tolerance and organizational skill. The Apadana reliefs famously depict 23 delegations bringing unique gifts. •Destruction: In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great’s forces looted and burned much of the wooden-roofed structures. The exact reason (revenge for Persian invasions of Greece, or possibly accidental during a drunken celebration) is still debated by historians. •Excavation: Serious scientific work began in the 1930s under Ernst Herzfeld and Erich Schmidt (University of Chicago Oriental Institute). Earlier travelers had documented the site since the 17th century, but modern excavations revealed its full grandeur. •Significance: At its peak, the Achaemenid Empire was one of the largest in history, stretching from the Balkans to the Indus Valley. Persepolis symbolizes its power, diversity, and sophisticated administration. Please see : Aerial views 👇👇👇 in following posts , showing the vast scale of the Persepolis terrace and ruins. This archaeological site continues to offer insights into ancient Persian culture, governance, and art.

Magnificent. Looking forward to visiting once the murderous, tyrannical Islamic Republic has been extinguished.

The brightly colored tiles and stained glass at the church is absolutely stunning. It's very beautiful there and I understand why they want to fight to keep it that way! A tour of Iran and its architecture wonders -rich history would be a great experience once peace happens!
