It allows stupidity to spread like wildfire

In the pre-Internet days, deluded people with strange conspiracy theories would call the local newspaper's city desk to try to get coverage for their ideas. Mean editors like me would say no. Now they just go online and immediately find a whole universe of kindred spirits and grifters to validate their delusions -- and sell them related merchandise.

Imagine 1985. Radical looney feminist writes to local paper editor every day "Reagan is a racist Nazi pedophile!" She was, rightly, completely ignored. Now, she IS the editor...

Right on the money

Social media has enabled millions of whack jobs to feel perfectly normal by discovering millions of other whack jobs that agree with them.

It's true. I came to this realization just a couple of years ago. It applies not only to non-harmful ideologies that flat-earthers subscribe to, but to more harmful ones too. They no longer have to pass through the filter of their common man/neighbor. They can condense and concentrate until their microcosm bursts open onto the poor adjacent people that have to suffer the strange reality the ideologues have crafted for themselves.

Tik Tok is the land of idiots. I see so many videos of people who are stupid as fuck, but think they are making good points about the economy or war. And guess what....some have thousands of followers who believe their fricking dribble. It's just content for serious creators.

Scattered?? Hardly. They are in the majority. The Internet simply amplifies that fact.

This is a bit like George Carlin. Dude isn't telling jokes, just spewing facts.

While a group of regular folk might rise up to stop the crazy ideas of a stupid person, the same applies to a brilliant person: A bright idea is likely to get snuck out by the dull masses.

This also kinda explains the rise in socialism.😅

This is the best theory of what happened to society in the Internet age 😂

My husband always says “ social media gives a voice to f’ing idiots’“

@Macronaut_ FLAT EARTH TRENDING 🔥🔥 #winning

flip side is dumb people can actually learn the truth by using the internet. Oops, forgot they are dumb people and refuse to learn the truth.

TRUE If there was no internet, trans would be at its normal insignificant size where we never notice it.

I missed the days when we all brainwashed each other organically So innocent

Double edged sword. It created a bunch of new dumb bubbles while it also destroyed a some dumb established ones.

it`s funny that you think you are not one of the dumb ones. that`s just amazing 😂 dude, you are a conspiracy theorist ffs 😂

Gee, how many years ago did telling everybody that the world was round gave you a death sentence?... It's not about being smart, it's about people who enforce a norm and people who don't give a shit. Both have stupid people among them.

"Who's bright idea was it to put every idiot in touch with every other idiot" - P.J. O'Rourke.

At the same time, it allows the opposite too, where intelligent people with their new ideas don't get shattered with those comments, they can find similar people that focused on the same problems, if not currently, then in history...

Stupidity is contagious. This is an under-appreciated fact.

@belleofva 😭😭

@siceudc credo che sia un ottima osservazione.

🤔 It also connected conspiracy theorists… or as we can them now: fortune tellers. 😉 Batting 400 these days.

There must be some truth to the flat earth theory if all the sarcasm and mockery is always directed at that place. Maybe the idiots are on the other side.

Hence the meteoric rise of racism.

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups” -George Carlin 2005

There was a time when it required a few smarts just to set up a computer to access the internet. Arguably, the internet was better then.

Yeah, I've noticed that. It's kind of like cloud seeding, except it works in anti-productive ways.
