On the last Tuesday of January, Up Helly AA fire festival celebrates the returning light. With around 1000 torches it is Europe's largest fire festival

Shetland has many of these festivals between January and March. Different islands and communities have their own, each a little different but all with torches, Vikings and a burning galley.

After the burning folk go to parties in local halls. Each squad of guisers performs at each hall and the party continues until about 7 the next morning. The day after is a public holiday!
