Well that was an adventure. Toad's fuzzy file search boosts first characters, smallest number of groups, and it highlights the best scoring match. So you can locate a file with the bare minimum of keypresses. It's an expensive algorithm as it scores every possible combination of the query characters.... For any given path there could be many indices which match, and each of them is scored separately. Still, it was fast enough to search as you type for my largest repository. Alas, it was slow for very large repos. Like Microsoft's Typescript, which has more than 84,000 files. I figured I'd reach the limit of what I could do with Python. So my options were to use something like ripgrep or re-implement the fuzzy searching in a faster language. I didn't want to add the ripgrep dependency, so I built a Rust version (with the help of AI) which eventually yielded a ~14X speedup. Nice. Better. But it could still become painful to type under certain pathological conditions. An inefficient algorithm can always be slow if you add more items. So I scrapped the Rust solution and built an index in Python—so the fuzzy search could throw away most paths that wouldn't match or have low scores. And its faster than the Rust solution was. The only downside is that there is a little additional work upfront (done in the background). I think this will do for a while. Until I get an issue that it is slow with 10million files. Now that I am home and have access to my files I decided to do a quick test with one of my Vtubing avatars. It works way better with my larger iPad Pro (less crashing/more memory and more screen space) compared to the mini so I did want to bring that up. Importing the file over as GLB was more stable than just OBJ plus it kept the color info from the previous texture. I texture all my avatars on substance painter but have been looking at an alternative when I am out and about that is not on the computer and this actually hits all the right "wants". Adding a quick video of the way the app works for me. I like that it has layers, I can alter my brushes and even add stabilization when I am drawing (which I use that extensively on procreate so that was a huge plus). The stamp tools will come in handy as well but did not show it on this video. The file itself is imported as "one mesh" but each part is treated as their own separate piece which I show in the video. I do the same thing on substance painter making it really easy for me to texture. The app then exports the texture out for each object which is the same way I do so on substance. Overall I am extremely impressed with the work Sparseal has done on this application and see how useful this will be for my current work flow of texturing. I for one love the ability to be "portable" which is a big reason I sculpt so much with Nomad Sculpt on the iPad. Having the freedom to do your work away from a desk and if you feel like doing it outside is probable why I yearn for iPad apps so much like so. Give this app a look, it is free to try on the App Store (It is $19 to be able to export, but a one time buy). It is called "Wafer" for the iPad. I already use CozyBlanket from the same creator to do re topology so I expected this level of fantastic with this current app.

I was surprised when I heard Criterion was doing Armageddon, 'cause I didn't think of it as that kind of movie when we did it. Um, and in retrospect now, I feel like maybe my best work in my career is the commentary on this disc. People approach me to talk about the commentary on this disc as much as they do like movies that I've been in. And it's because, um, I didn't know any better than to be really honest. I've been showing the output of my flight reconstruction tool for a while and I wanted to share something like it which wasn't a mess of hand tuned stuff that required X-Plane. So I created a completely new version in javascript that runs in an HTML page so that anyone can use it. The output is a KML file which is a tour that works in Google Earth pro with all the attitude information included. This is a long way from perfect, I messed around with multiple smoothing algorithms and none of them compares well with the python code, but they're readable and understandable for anyone.

Ok as an apology for forgetting there was a SPLIT animated music video and never finishing it, I will share some split lore. The version of split that you’ve heard was originally supposed to be a remix for a charity compilation in 2020(?). The “real” version was meant to be on Trust Ceremony (which was an entirely different album back then). So the remixed one came out on Bandcamp and I figured ok that’s done, back to work on the album version. The producer of the remix got rlly offended that I didn’t wanna do an official release of it (I like it. It just wouldn’t have fit on the album. I think they were hoping I would like it so much that it would replace my version. I did not). BUT I figured there’s no harm in doing a lyric video for the remix and releasing it, then saving the “REAL” animated video for the album version later. Might even be cooler to have 2 of em! Anyways, shortly after that, I completely changed directions with the album, both sonically and conceptually. After that happened, I just couldn’t see a place for a Good Value Dresden Dolls track on the record, so scrapped it and forgot about the video entirely until now. So here’s that version. I still think it’s fun

Existing search tools on Windows suck. Even with an SSD, it’s painfully slow. So I built a prototype of Nowgrep. It bypasses most of the slow Windows nonsense, and just parses the raw NTFS. On an SSD, this ends up faster than ripgrep, even on a cached run (Nowgrep bypasses most Software caching). Demo: Filtering 2 million and searching ~270K files under C:/ for the substring "Hello". I have many ideas to make these an even smoother experience. Let me know if this is interesting, and I might pursue it further to make a shippable product with good UX.

In Rust, error handling is opt-out, not opt-in. Alice Ryhl (Rust for Android at Google, Rust language advisor & Tokio maintainer) explains: “The other thing I think is quite good is error handling. So on one hand, Rust doesn't really use exceptions, so it actually returns the error as a value. So you return a value that's, using an enum, either the result or the error. And the way this is done is that there's an operator `?` - so you write: my_function and then a question mark at the end - which means if this function fails, return the error. So it's really easy to handle errors but it's not serial characters like it is with exceptions, so it's explicit. On the other hand, if you forget to put the question mark, that's a compilation error. So you have to check it, and of course you can also have it manually, but the point is it's this idea of there are these things where you write some code and there's some implicit error condition you didn't think of and now you just took down your server or something.”

👤: of course ARMYs loved your solo work. if i see one critique, they say they “wish you wrote more”. and that the album was “very western”, for better or worse. have you heard that, and what do you make of that idea? 🐰: that just happened to be my choice at the time. i could write more for my next album, if that’s what ARMYS want. 🐰: but back then i wanted something else. i wanted to get good songs and release an album as soon as i could. 🐰: that’s the whole reason. i also think the kinds of stories i can tell are pretty limited. i said in an interview somewhere that id rather make up stories to tell, but i have an S in my MBTI profile. so gosh, that was hard. 🐰: so in the future, once i have a lot to do and a lot to say, i think it will happen naturally.

There’s been times when I’m walking or hiking in the woods and I hear knocking coming a building, it gives me an eerie vibe like a trapped in the woods kind of feeling. I know I post about this stuff a bit but it truly fascinates me. Like how this man is hearing knocking on the ground in the woods like something underneath him is knocking but it’s solid ground right? The only logical explanation I can think of is it’s reverb from construction or possibly pipes on the ground being worked on. I was at the state park getting a jog in, the surrounding area was flat, I could see far on either side of me. The fields were clear of trees like a new developmental lot. I didn’t have my headphones on, I decided just to go for a jog without them. During the jog it was quiet, except for the sounds of the wildlife, I could tell they were there, it didn’t bother me. However as I progressed I started hearing a screeching noise, it didn’t sound like any animal to me, almost like old metal on metal brakes of a car ready to fail is how I would describe it. I wasn’t worried because as I said before, the area I was at was clear, it wasn’t as if anybody could be hiding along my path, it was just empty, but what made it weird is I couldn’t pinpoint where the noise was and it sounded close yet I couldn’t see anything that could be the source. Just a dirt path and grass. There were trees along the horizon but they were far, too far for that noise to be so close. For the rest of the job I kept my eyes open but to this day I still couldn’t explain what that noise was.

And that is, for me, a bit an exercise in doing it intellectually just because you can I don't really think there's a big sense in it. If you have the memory for a garbage collector, you should absolutely use one, because it makes a lot of things simpler. So, yes, of course, if given enough brains, I can write code around and I can do that, but why should you? It can be much simpler."

George's Post-Quali Interview🏁 "We were quickest in FP3, quickest in Q1, quickest in Q2 and I had an issue with the power steering in Q3 and qualified fourth.:Lando did an amazing job and these conditions are obviously very challenging and ultimately it always comes down to that last lap. That last lap is key and unfortunately in Q3 I had this problem. So I'm not saying I would have been there with Lando who clearly did an amazing job but it was just a shame. But it went away from us at the key moment of the day. I jumped out the car 10 minutes ago but just suddenly on one lap I didn't hit a wall or anything but the steering got really heavy. Every time I was sliding I couldn't control, it was like getting locked in position. So on my last lap I was talking with the engineer making sure it's even safe to drive because when you're doing 230 miles an hour down the straight and you think maybe the wheel might fall off or something might happen, it's a bit concerning and it doesn't give you the most amount of confidence to send it around the corner. So as I said, I am disappointed. We looked quick, it just didn't come together but P4 is not a bad place. I think we've got a chance. I think we'll be in the fight. I don't think there'll be a big pace difference between the three teams at the front. I can't say which way, like who's going to be the quickest or who's going to be the slowest but I'll be surprised if the spread is more than a tenth of a second between the three teams. So that makes for an exciting race. Sometimes being at the back to start with, you can do something slightly different with the strategy. So yeah, it could be okay." #LasVegasGP #F1

I think I've written the world's fastest Blender exporter. It exports full levels in 9 milliseconds. Check out this video where I show live editing of levels from blender, and it updates instantly in the game. For some context: Okay, since the beginning of development on this game project, I knew I didn't want to write a custom level editor for it and rather spend my time programming the game. I decided to use blender as the level editor, and export directly from blender to my game engine's file format. Blender only lets you write add-ons in Python, which is not just incredibly slow but also a terrible platform for this kind of systems programming work. So, after having a Python exporter for the longest time, I decided enough was enough, and I programmed this exporter in C. Blender doesn't expose any C API or interface. So my only option was to download Blender's source code and insert my code directly into Blender. And that's what I did :) So this new C exporter not only is orders of magnitude faster than the python version, but also is way more robust. And because I'm in C land, my hands are much freer to do things. There are two elements of secret sauce that make this exporter run so fast: - A custom memory arena implementation. - Lockless multithreading.

Q. Army course loved your solo work, I think if i see one critique, they say they wish you wrote more and that the solo album was very Western, for better or worse. Have you heard that, and what do you make of that idea? 🐰 That just happened to be my choice at the time. i could write more for my next album, if that’s what ARMYS want, but back then, i wanted something else. i wanted to get good songs and release an album as soon as i could. That's the whole reason 🐰: I also think the kind of stories I can tell are pretty limited. I said in an interview somewhere that I'd rather make up stories to tell, but I have an S in MBTI profile, so gosh, that was hard. So once in the future , I have a lot to do and say.
