We’re currently running at full capacity. With two machines doing nothing but forestry mulching, our max revenue is $70,000 per month—and we’re there. We’re booked out through October and will be through the end of the season, which ends in November. Each machine can bring in around $35,000 per...

If you had another machine, would you be able to hit the 35k/month?

Good question. Yes, but another machine would require a lot more investment. Another truck, trailer, and more shop space. If I have 3, I can support 4 with a second truck and trailer.

Do you market and sell this as brush fire prevention with pain points around risk of losing your home in wildfires? There’s a company in San Diego that has a very unique angle and they zip code target brush fire areas

Had you done this kind of work before? Or how did you learn the trade before jumping in?

We had never done anything remotely close to this. We just got the machine, bought a truck that can haul it from my by business partner’s brother for $8k, got our first job, and showed up. We had to have the Bobcat sales rep show us how to turn it on. We’ve gotten pretty damn good with it now.

Time to add a third machine?

We could honestly run 10 pretty easily, but we’re still new, so it takes time to build up the cash to expand.

What do your gross margins look like? Ballpark (Revenue minus equipment, supplies, wages/contractors, fuel etc)

We hover around 40% profit margin. Biggest expense is equipment repair, service, and depreciation. We're new still, in our second year. Almost all of that is being reinvested into growth. We could easily keep 10 machines running every day in our market, but it takes time to build enough cash to reinvest into increased capacity.

What is forestry mulching? Who are your clients? What do you do with the mulch? How often do they need repairs? Need a license to operate? If booked so far out does that mean time to raise prices? How many real competitors in your market ?
