Wonderful and very friendly atmosphere at Selhurst Park Crystal Palace F.C. yesterday for the final game of the season. Wonderful to see Ebere back at the ground where he got a wonderful reception. Congratulations to Arsenal on lifting the trophy for the first time in 22 years. However, I do have an idea for the Premier League …. As Palace season ticket holders we were told under no circumstances were we to swap our tickets and let Arsenal fans have them. Indeed, if we were found to have done that we would be denied season tickets for next year. Completely understandable as I’m sure there were safety concerns. Not surprising though that we were actually surrounded by Arsenal fans pretending to be Palace fans by either wearing Palace shirts or plain white tops for the match only to take them off and replace them with Arsenal shirts they had in their pockets at the end of the game! Now I’m not complaining about what the fans did at all. They were wonderful, friendly and even joined in on “Glad All Over” and applauded the Palace team, players and Oliver Glasner at the end of the game. We got lots of “Good luck in Leipzig” wishes from them too. It was a really friendly atmosphere. But I completely understand their frustration at how hard it was to get tickets for many who were lifelong Arsenal supporters. Chatting with them they said that 2400 seats available for sale. 1200 kept by Arsenal for themselves so only 1200 seats available for the match where they were going to be presented with the trophy. No wonder lots of fans did all they could to get tickets any way possible. So here is a suggestion for the Premier League for next season when working out the fixtures….. Realistically there are probably only 4 or 5 teams who will possibly win the league next year. So why not make sure all those teams have a home game as their final game of the season? In that way the tens of thousands of supporters who go to every home game will have the opportunity to see their team lift the trophy and actually be there rather than having to watch it later on TV? Surely that can’t be too difficult to arrange and if all the potential winners have a home game as their final match there is no unfair advantage towards any of those sides? What do you think? More than 1,200 people in London have taken part in one of the largest acts of mass civil disobedience in British history, to protest the Palestine Action ban. At 1pm on Saturday, hundreds of protesters, many of them elderly, sat down in Parliament Square and wrote “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine action” on cardboard signs. Among those taking part was Reverend Sue Parfitt, an 83-year-old priest, who was arrested at the first-ever protest against proscription on 5 July, the day it came into effect. The action, organised by Defend Our Juries (DOJ), was designed to pose an “unprecedented simultaneous challenge to all three legal systems within the UK’s constitutional framework”. In a statement released before the protest, the Met police claimed the force had the “officer numbers, custody capacity and all other resources” necessary to arrest everyone. It was forced to backtrack on similar claims last month, speaking of the “entirely unrealistic” challenges it faced in enforcing the Palestine Action ban. On 9 August, 532 people were arrested for holding placards in Parliament Square, in what was at the time the largest mass arrest event in London since 1961 - but it took the police hours, and many hundreds more protesters were able to leave, despite having broken the law. Half of those arrested were over 60 - one was a blind man in a wheelchair. Police dealt with the huge number of arrests last time by processing them nearby in Westminster and granting most arrestees “street bail” - meaning they were released immediately and didn’t need to be transferred to a police station. Among those taking part was Reverend Sue Parfitt, an 83-year-old priest, who was arrested at the first-ever protest against proscription on 5 July, the day it came into effect. The action, organised by Defend Our Juries (DOJ), was designed to pose an “unprecedented simultaneous challenge to all three legal systems within the UK’s constitutional framework”. On a serious note, and giving full credit to Governor Cox for what it seems he is trying to convey here, there are absolutely subversive groups who, whether nationally or right here in Utah, try to stop everything. It is frustrating, to say the least. But, Governor, you have built the machine that facilitates this subversion. You have created a culture of top-down administration and backroom deals. You have overseen the proliferation of bad legislation crafted by entities like the Unified Economic Opportunity Commission—a commission you created to empower the executive branch to craft legislation. And it is not just used to craft legislation, like the slew of bills to centralize control of water in Utah, but to act as a heavy hand. You ensure that anyone who opposes that legislation, or even dares to suggest the executive branch leave lawmaking to the legislature, will be harshly dealt with. Anyone who wants to do business in Utah understands that you start at the top, not at the bottom. Once you have the approval of the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, the Governor, and his Office of Economic Opportunity, the deal is as good as done. The same could be said of the judicial system, where all appointees seem to owe some fealty to you. You know it, they know it, and it is demonstrated in the way they pass down bogus rulings in favor of the state and against the people. Now, you want to stand up and speak as if you are the entrepreneur who is tired of being stalled by that very machine. When I hear this, I wonder, "Who is 'we'?" For so many of us who simply wanted to help Utah be better - who started businesses, ran for school board, city council, or other offices; who volunteer our time and money to good causes; who boldly defy the world by having kids and raising them to be productive, honest, kind humans—your words do not match your actions.
