mistakes after mistakes unfortunately, Nawawi did call himself Ashari when he always referred to them as "أصحابنا المتكلمون" and he mentions the Ashari position as the position of Ahlul Sunnah. Nawawi never once mentioned the position of the Salaf/Habali "Ithbat" ever, you know why ? because he believes it as an innovation. Nawawi's student Ibn al Attar wasn't Salafi, his book لمعة الاعتقاد you can't say its Ashari nor Salafi, its vary gray book in terms of Aqeedah and terms. Nawawi never believed Allah is above the throne, in fact he has very famous statement "وما الفرق بين اثبات الجهة والتكييف؟" "there's no difference between affirming direction to Allah and affirming the modality" he also doesn't view the Kafir who say "لا اله الا ساكن السماء" to be a Muslim. he also takfeers those who affirm direction to Allah so clearly he doesnt believe he is above the throne or anything. this misdirection of the youth regarding these two men is very dangerous, many youth already had left Salafiya due to finding out Nawawi and Ibn Hajar are actually Asharis, we shouldn't fool ourselves or our brothers.

Just because a scholar agreed with the Ash’aris on some points does not make them Asha’ri in methodology. It is the same as if a Hanbali takes a Shafi’i position, that does not make him Shafi’i, as was said by Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen. Allah knows best.

An-Nawawi was an ash'ari al-Hamduli-Llâh (see. Al Minhaj, his Sharh fi Sahih Muslim, what his students said, and also Ad-Dhahabî). For Ibn Hajar, see his Fath al-Bari, Durar al-Kamina and others books). Ad-Dhahabi called of lot of ash'ariyya "Shaykh ul Islam" in his Siyar.
