Standard Bank has strongly rejected allegations that its traders manipulated the rand, insisting the case against it was mishandled from the start. The bank says the investigation, launched in 2015, lasted over a year and a half without the Commission requesting documents or meeting any of its representatives. It was surprised when the Commission went public in February 2017, accusing 16 banks of collusion, and described the referral affidavit as “patently inadequate.” Standard Bank says it promptly sought to engage with the Commission, but its requests were refused, and it maintains that it found no wrongdoing by its traders.
