So... are they gonna get that from the africans that sold the slaves to the american slave traders also? And also... slavery is alive and well in parts of africa still to this day.

It's nonsense. How about we get reparations from African nations that tried to continue the slave trade after we abolished it and spent a fortune patrolling West African seas trying to stop them. Yes, that's nonsense too.

Time to flush the trash Commonwealth down the drain. No cash for professional victim countries. British MPs who call for it should be denaturalized and deported.

It's really infuriating. It just causes division and anger... Their absolute refusal to acknowledge that most ppl were slaves...if a white mentions its laughed off. Most of Britain wasn't even here during slavery. & Many ancestors of transatlantic slavery are now white.

British gave "£20 million (in 1830s) in compensation to slave owners under Slavery Abolition Act 1833". Equal to "£16–20 billion (or higher) using measures of relative economic size", todays money. "It represented 40% of the British government’s annual expenditure @ the time".

So you want reparations from the people that ended it but say nothing to the others that continue it to this day.

What’s a better reparation than living in Bermuda and not Africa ???

Can you admit that white people in your country and ours have given your people trillions over the years and yet you're worse off now than ever.

Keep talking. Britain did not start the Slave Trade but we did end it. Get off your lazy backsides and stop looking for handouts from Whitey.

Forget history. You are right about human level similarities. But have you ever heard of Wealth compounding? Cumulative generational wealth? I agree, the British public should not pay. They were paying until 2015 from debt incurred when slave owners were paid after abolition of slavery. Now it's time for the descendants of slaves to be paid by the entities that have hidden their origin as slave owning plantations. Each such legacy that's transformed into corporations or companies with compounded wealth, should pay reparations. Reparations is not just monetary. It is welfare, health and educational access.

recognition for their ancestors and the communities torn apart by enslavement. Various tribes and communities were implicated in these historical events, and several countries could become part of the wider discussion. This is an enormous and complex historical issue

And then, in 5 years, we need more reparations from the people who either spent it ("it wasn't enough!")or missed out the first time, ad nauseam in perpetuity.

dont bother unless your going to find where the money went when we paid the slave owners so you can sort it out with them then go to africa and sort those countries that sold their own people then deal with the arab states

@estherckrakue Way back then slaves were nice polite people. When slavery stopped they were still nice polite people. What has happened to them in the 21st century.

Good to hear someone with a common sense view on the reparations issue. I really believe the whole thing is just holding things back and is used as a distraction by politicians as you say. Slavery is just evil, a human evil committed by humans and still happening. Let’s end that

A people whose ancestors worked so hard cannot have their history and contributions reduced to a monetary payment. The consequences of slavery go far beyond money. This issue would not concern only you. There are also people across the African continent who continue to seek

Not defending slavery, but the arguments are too simplistic. Britain didn’t turn up and find extensive rail, road, port and institutional infrastructure. It built it all. And improved local education and health. Nations benefited from the wealth this created during and after.
