TLDR it’s a byproduct known as Ambergris. Largely illegal to possess or sell across the globe due to many considering it “whale byproduct.” But there are countries where it is legal such as in Europe. It’s used as an oil to drastically extend the staying power of a perfume’s or cologne’s scent past what it naturally would last. Only high end companies use real ambergris whereas virtually every other company uses a synthetic ambergris to achieve the same results

The substance is called Ambergris. While yeah it's usually whale poop, it's also been artificially made as ambroxan. When done right, it can have an earthy and marine smell to it.
