What a Beautiful song….

*James Taylor - Fire & Rain

Suzanne Schnerr was a close friend of James from their days in the New York music scene. She died by suicide in 1968 while James was in London recording his debut album for Apple Records. His friends actually kept the news from him for several months so he wouldn't spiral or be distracted from his "big break." When he finally found out, he wrote: "Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone." James wrote the rest of the song while he was in various stages of treatment for depression and heroin addiction (specifically at Austen Riggs Center and later reflecting on his time at McLean Hospital).

So beautiful and genuine. Such bottomless depths of pain. They will still be listening to that song hundreds and 100s of years from now.

I’ve met him in real life. I was at a coffee shop in the LES, NYC listening to a guy play an acoustic guitar. There were no seats left and my table was the only place to sit down. I didn’t recognize him. He looked like any normal NYC baby boomer. He was quiet, nice, polite.

My childhood was spent listening to him.

it IS a beautiful song from a Beautiful artist. /I just not understand the freedom loving to far left thing., In his day was ,and what I still believe, was classical liberalism I guess money, changes political alliances., He aint what he sold me he was.

JT !!!

@ok32650586 Just JT & a guitar. No electricity or over production needed.

Mister James Taylor. Superb. Master.

I could listen to James Taylor sing the phone book.

@Philmachinist No argument here.

@BigMac61815311 One of my faves from James Taylor

a Little musical factoid..... the line "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend" was the inspiration for Carol King to write the song for him "you've got a friend" she wrote it Jan 71 for Taylor to sing... she then released one of the best albums ever ( Tapestry ) one month later Feb 71

Back when we had hair. But, yes, a beautiful song - and painful.

James Taylor GREAT, saw him live a couple of times, just him and acoustic guitar. ⭐️

💯

I remember exactly where I was when first hearing this song ....takes you back ❤️

The great Carol King

My first 8 track tape, given to me by an older sister, was James Taylor's greatest hits...

Timeless classic.

Love JT

Sucks

He sang this in NY after 911 and for me it will forever be a dedication to those we lost on 911

Our beautiful NC son, James Taylor. Yes it is a beautiful song about a dear friend of his.

It really is his best one.

A beautiful song - sang by a beautiful voice ❤️

This song broke me when he’s saying it for the families of those that were killed on 9/11 by the radical Islamic terrorists. It broke me.

Or maybe too slow and dull to some?

Love it

Just love James Taylor❤️
