The best commercial for the Toyota HiLux was an episode of Top Gear. They really tried to trash it, including fully submeging it in the sea for hours.

Men stopped writing commercials about 15 years ago - it's why we now see commercial on TV with a mix couple (Asian wife and a white dude )arguing over the husbands dishwashing techniques and how to make laundry smell fresh - I just saw one - nobody relates to that - most females are humorless until a man makes a joke

With EVs, going through a very deep puddle causes them to fizzle out....so this ad wouldn't work anymore. But yes, it was a good one.

i was going to say because companies cannot lie or exagerate about their product and there are some people that didnt understand that it was a commercial and was to not be taken literally. then i realize it was a hilux, so this could be completely possible

It's hyperbole but it's got a kernel of truth. There's a reason it used to be ISIS's favourite truck to put heavy machine guns on. These trucks don't break down and if they do, they're easy to fix with lots of spare parts going around.

These days it would be impossible to air this kind of comercial without a huge disclaimer...
