CYD CHARISSE and GENE KELLY Dance Sequence | SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952). Cyd Charisse as the woman in the green sequined dress and hair in the style of Louise Brooks as well as in a white dress and long wind-blown train, who vamps Gene Kelly in the “Broadway Melody” dance sequence in Singin' in the Rain (1952). Cyd was a technically skilled dancer in Hollywood’s golden age of movie musicals. Famous for her long legs, graceful style, and dramatic presence, she became a major star at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) during the 1940s and 1950s. In this clip from Gene Kelly’s Singin’ in the Rain (1952), her “Broadway Melody” sequence, where she appeared as a sultry flapper, made her an overnight star. Interestingly, Cyd Charisse had no speaking lines in the film — her entire role was expressed through dance. Gene Kelly choreographed his dance scenes with Cyd Charisse to hide the fact that she was taller than he was. To keep the height difference from being obvious, Kelly staged the routine so that the two were rarely upright when standing next to each other, always bending toward or away from one another instead.

Xanadu was one of my favourite movies ...can't believe it's been 45 years since I saw it in the theatre. For me, this will always be the sound of summer in 1980. The irony behind their beaming smiles was that there were a rain of tears for some, namely ― Debbie Reynolds who in print of her memoirs, and verbatim interviews, had divulged her trying time at work on this film, likening it to childbirth in her memoirs. “Singin’ in the Rain and childbirth were the two hardest things I ever had to do in my life.” It is no news that Gene Kelly, as gifted as he evidently was, could be strenuous to work with. At 19, Reynolds had been exposed to dance but never to the professional degree on footing with O’Connor and Kelly ― pointing out that Kelly “criticised everything I did”, and at that, “never gave me a word of encouragement”. Noting at one point her feet were bleeding from the dancing to which Kelly retorted, “clean it up”. After finishing this dance she was carried to her dressing room because several blood vessels in her feet had burst due to the grueling rehearsal process. Surprisingly, Kelly not all impressed with her performance, dubbed her taps in post-production. Upon reflection, and years later, he admitted: “I wasn’t nice to Debbie. It’s a wonder she still speaks to me”. Far from an isolated incident, O’Connor along with other co-stars such as Millard Mitchell, the memorable Jean Hagen, director Stanley Donen all took issue with the verbal abuse from Kelly. Donen adding that ― “he was unprofessional, and a bully”. With Hagen reporting, “He would insult you all day”, and then ― “try to sleep with you at night”. It is unclear if she meant the latter part literally, or as a figure of speech. Donen ― a longtime collaborator with Kelly refused to work with him after a following 1955 film. This does not diminish Kelly’s achievements, but it is a reminder that behind our favourite screen moments lay difficultly and complex interpersonal relationships that are not excused by virtue of talent, but a salient example that figures no matter how glorified they are were human, and could be prone to errors. I, for one, am not obsessed with figures as objects of fantasies, but as real human beings ― who have left us with this unforgettable performance.
