What a difference a day makes! Before and after video of Providence, Rhode Island during the historic Blizzard of '26. I captured the before scenes around 2pm on Feb. 22 and then ventured out 24 hours later as more than 36 inches of snow.

It's incredible seeing our Providence covered in so much snow. I got stuck on a side street on Federal Hill yesterday. Countless residents from that neighborhood helped me for over 90 minutes to get me get back to Broadway. Amazing people and I am forever grateful. 🙏

Snow totals ranged from as little as 8 inches in some areas to 37 inches or more in harder-hit regions, with massive snow drifts bringing many cities to a standstill. Winds gusted between 60–70 mph, creating dangerous whiteout conditions. Despite the hazardous weather, many people took time to enjoy the storm from massive snowball fights breaking out in New York City to people walking around Boston in shorts and T-shirts. Major cleanup and recovery efforts are now underway across the region.

I live in Maine, the state runs snow plows when it starts snowing. They run all through the storm so this doesn’t happen. The incompetence here is astounding, 30” of snow or not. We’ve had ‘feet’ of snow here. This video is from Providence Rhode Island 24 hrs after the storm.

Pixie the cat, was stuck in a tree for 3 days during the worst storm in Providence, Rhode Island history recently. They called the police, fire and animal control departments, and all were unable to help because of the record breaking blizzard that dumped 37.9 inches of snow. The first chance they got, local Providence Union 37 Ironworkers showed up. Matt scaled up the tree & carefully down & saved Pixie. There are still so many heroes in the world. Bravo Union 37 Ironworkers. Bravo Matt, you are a true gentleman and hero. 👏

Day 3 of the major snowstorm at Donner Summit. Periods of heavy snow continue, albeit less intense than yesterday. Cars are completely buried, and a rapid dig-out has begun before another 2–3 feet of snow falls tomorrow. Expect the highway to close again, so I’ve ended my snow chase and driven back down into the Central Valley. Yesterday’s conditions were the fiercest winter storm conditions I have ever covered or been a part of. We left the summit around 12:30 pm, as blizzard conditions persisted for hours. It was a complete whiteout, with no visibility beyond a couple hundred feet at any point. Even my chasing partner Michael’s car with 4WD, snow-studded tires and high clearance was absolutely no match for the storm. Visibility reached truly zero at times, and peak snow rates reached 4–5 inches per hour. Even though winds were lighter than in other I-80 blizzards, the extremely low-density snow made it incredibly easy to blow around. I chased the 10-foot blizzard during Leap Day 2024, several major storms during the winter of 2023, and experienced epic months like February 2019, December 2021, and January 2017, but the peak intensity of this storm puts it above the storm conditions I experienced during these events. Prayers go out to the victims and families of those who perished in yesterday’s avalanche near Frog Lake. A terrible tragedy.
