This trail is used by both the Mithrandir Pack (hence the name of the trail) and the Nashata Pack. Both packs are in this video, and are the primary reason we have a camera here—the other neat footage of other wildlife is just a bonus! Thats because we basically did not have winter last year. Last year was the mildest winter on record for the Voyageurs area, and we had little snow cover for most of the winter and temps were regularly above freezing. Very odd times but made getting around the woods pretty nice!

We set this trail camera on a remote wildlife trail near a beaver pond, and here are the highlights from the past year or so! Notably, we captured many more videos of wolves, bears, deer, snowshoes hares, and more but condensed it here to the best footage captured. Of course, our primary goal of setting this camera was to get footage of the wolves in the area, and that was a resounding success as we captured many observations of wolves in the Mithrandir Pack.

But, it was a beautiful setting in some conifers along a small creek and we figured wolves would likely would travel through this more open terrain along the creek. Turns out, this was a pretty good spot. And it wasn’t just wolves that used this scenic stretch of forest as you can see. In total, we have captured more than 1,500 videos of wildlife on this camera in the past year or so (8.3 hours of footage). Most videos are of snowshoe hares and deer but wolves (the Half-Moon Pack) cruise through the area periodically as do most of the other forest predators. This 3 minute video is just a highlight reel of some of the most interesting footage. Big thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resource Trust Fund for their continued support of our work. We set this camera in a new spot last fall where a deer trail crossed a remote hiking trail. This video is a distillation of 7 months of footage totaling >2 hours. Suffice it to say, we were pleased with this spot and we hope you enjoy the footage! The camera was put up in late October. Most of the first videos captured were during the rut when several bucks were traveling on the deer trail. One buck, in particular, was a bruiser in terms of body size. And then as the rut winded down, the number of bucks on camera dwindled and does started using the trail more frequently for the rest of the fall and winter. Of course, wolves traveled on both the hiking and deer trail throughout the fall and winter. In some instances, wolves traveled down the hiking trail and then stopped to smell deer tracks on the deer trail. We suspect they were assessing how fresh the tracks were and therefore how close a deer might be. In some instances, wolves veered off the hiking trail and ventured down the deer trail, and in others, they continued down the hiking trail. Notably, we put this camera here because this is where the Cranberry Bay and Nashata Packs overlap. You can see both packs on cameras. Cranberry is the larger pack and Nashata is the smaller pack with a whitish wolf with green-ear tags. As mentioned above, we distilled >2 hr of footage into a 6 minute video. We did not include much of the nighttime footage, which was mainly of a snowshoe hare that spent a ton of time in front of the camera and deer traveling at night down the deer trail. We included most wolf footage in the video but there were a few nighttime sequences we excluded because they weren’t great quality. Interestingly, though, we did not get a ton of other wildlife on this camera other than wolves and deer.

The Listening Point Pack was 5 pack members (3 adults and two pups) and these are the wolves in most of the footage in this video. You can see two of the adults (the breeding male and a subordinate adult male) several times as well as the two pups. The December 2nd footage gives a great clear view of all 4 of these wolves. In two instances, it appears the Listening Point Pack killed deer near this camera as wolves were carrying deer legs past the camera on Jan 10 and Mar 3. The Mithrandir Pack was just a breeding pair last winter. You can see these wolves on November 11 and 20, and April 15. This area is on the periphery of their territory so not surprising we did not have many observations of them in this spot. The first footage of wolves eating raspberries to our knowledge! We captured this footage last summer when the Bug Creek Pack pups spent a good while foraging for berries in this patch. Of course, we have known for a while wolves eat raspberries as we have sifted through many scats full of raspberry seeds. However, we’ve never observed the behavior before. Just a few months ago, before we were aware we captured this footage, we actually published a scientific paper on the “berry-eating” behavior of wolves. The big takeaway from our study (link to study below!): based on our data, wolves foraging on berries in our area is an extremely widespread behavior and one that almost every wolf we have studied engages in when berries are abundant. We have captured trail camera footage of wolves of all ages, sexes, and social statuses (i.e., breeding or subordinate wolf) from several packs foraging on berries. All of this indicates “berry-eating” by wolves is likely pervasive across large portions of southern boreal ecosystems in places like Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. However, given the lack of summer research on the foraging ecology of wolves in these areas, we think this behavior has just gone unnoticed. Although, there is evidence based on scats collected in these areas that wolves are foraging on berries. Now, it is important to understand why wolves eat berries and to not misconstrue this finding with the notion that wolves eat berries because they prefer berries over animal prey. Wolves do not have digestive systems that are meant to digest plant matter and berries effectively. Thus, berries are almost certainly "starvation food" for wolves; as in, the wolves are starving and berries are the best option given the circumstances to stave off hunger and slow weight loss. All this to say, wolves are not eating berries instead of other animals because they prefer berries over meat. We have no doubt that if a wolf had an option between a meal of berries or of deer/ beaver that it would choose the latter every single time. Catching deer and beavers, wolves primary summer prey, is extremely challenging for wolves in late summer, and likely requires extensive energy expenditure. Thus, instead of spending substantial energy hunting prey they likely cannot catch, wolves turn to berries, which are abundant, taste good, and likely make them feel full. In other words, all evidence suggests wolves are just eating berries to slow starvation and weight loss. Read our recent study on the “berry-eating” behavior of wolves for free here:

Cool footage of 2 bull moose sparring from just 2 weeks ago! And then toward the end of the sequence another small bull decides to join in the fun. All-in-all, some trail camera gold! We’ve only captured this on camera one other time so far. But this footage is much better than our other observation, in part, because the lighting was almost perfect in this video. Suffice it to say, we were pretty excited to capture this footage. In total, the moose were in front of the camera for 14 minutes but we condensed it down to the highlights here. A fair portion of the videos were the bulls just standing there staring at each other.

Interesting turn of events with Nancy Guthrie case (mother of NBC host kidnapping) The woman the FBI got the Nest camera footage from didn’t have a Premium subscription Yet without a subscription, even being disabled, it was able to record and store footage “We are tracked, they are listening, they are watching, we are being recorded” What’s happening is even if you don’t have a subscription Google is recording and storing the footage from your doorbell camera, but you can only access it without a subscription You think it’s not being recorded and stored, but it is…. Even with the camera disabled, it was recording footage and able to be recovered… “Nancy Guthrie had a Nest camera, which is owned by Google, and law enforcement initially believed the doorbell footage was lost and said Nancy Guthrie did not have a premium subscription to access video from her doorbell camera — Now, according to Google, if a Nest camera is disabled, it can still record up to three hours of event video history without a subscription. So many are wondering, why did it take so long for this video to be released? Well, it takes time for authorities to basically recover this video from Google servers, since Nancy Guthrie did not have a premium subscription that offers special features for video history. And essentially, video is continuously recorded and saved with a subscription, but without a subscription, video is saved until it's overwritten. In this case, they thought because there was no subscription, it would have been erased and recorded over because it would be sort of a continuous situation. And then that's the real issue here. Look, we live in a surveillance economy and as much as we'd like to think that we can delete things and things will go away, and there are some apps that in fact make things go away, the truth of the matter is that we are tracked, They are listening, they are watching, we are being recorded.”

For almost 2 years now, this lone wolf has hobbled around the Voyageurs area on 3 legs. The wolf’s front left foot is permanently injured/disabled for some unknown reason. We shared a post about this wolf in 2023 and since the wolf is still around, figured we would just share an update with some footage we captured of this wolf over the past year. When wolves lose the function of a back leg, they can still move around fairly quickly because most of a wolf’s power and balance comes from their front legs where most of their bulk and muscle is. We have seen many wolves on trail cameras over the year that are limping and not putting weight on a back leg that are still moving around pretty well. However, losing the function of a front leg is much more debilitating because wolves cannot move quickly without a front leg. You can see that in this video. Nonetheless, wolves are persistent and resourceful. Clearly, this lone wolf has figured out a way to find enough food to live for several years. From what we can tell, the wolf appears to be in decent body condition too. We can only guess how this wolf would find enough food. We suspect it likely does quite a bit of scavenging (e.g., scavenging other wolves’ kills, roadkill deer, beavers that have been trapped for damming up culverts, and any number of human-created food sources). During summer, this wolf could likely catch hiding fawns and beavers, both of which would not require chasing prey down. However, we do struggle to see how this wolf would kill adult deer or older fawns during the rest of the year since it is hard to imagine the wolf chasing them down.

We captured more daytime footage of lynx this past winter than in any previous winter, in large part, because we had many more cameras out this winter compared to previous years (had ~350 cameras out this winter). And more cameras means, we get more neat observations like these (plus higher-quality data on wolves in the area, which is the main reason we deploy so many cameras). Note: this is the 2nd video of our “best" lynx footage from this winter. See our post on Monday for the 1st video if you haven’t watched that one yet. Both have some pretty neat sequences in our opinion! YOKO ONO: ONOCHORD, VENICE, 2004 Yoko: The world is divided in two industries. One is the War Industry and the other is the Peace Industry. The people in the War Industry are totally together. They don't have to talk to each other, even. They know exactly what they want to do. They want to go out there, kill and make money. But the people in the Peace Industry, which are us - we are so idealistic that each one of us criticises the other Peace Person in the Peace Industry. And we are always just arguing and we are wasting our energies doing that. So let's just forgive each other and see that we are in the Peace Industry and that's all that counts. Even if you are not marching for peace, just be yourself, being a florist, being a merchant, being a talior, anything. That way you're contributing to the Peace Industry. People are just concentrating on fear, confusion and anger. And therefore just for a moment, I'd like us to think about Love. In a very magical, straight way, John and I met in London and from then on we stood for Peace and Love. And when I do this kind of event. Well it is... I was inspired to do it, but I still think that I'm still with John in spirit. John and I created the country called Nutopia. Not Utopia, because there was Utopia as a concept already. And we wanted to create a new concept, so we just added N on it - Nutopia - and as a country. Well, that is the concept of a country. And we all are citizens of that country. And in my apartment in the Dakota Building, we put a little plaque on the back door, the kitchen door. It says 'Nutopian Embassy' and even now we have that. (laughs). Nutopia exists in our minds. And because of that, some people want to rebel against it. The reason some want to rebel against it is a good proof that it exists. I think that it was a terrible thing that happened in Chechnya. But we have to still keep our hopes up. And instead of giving up, we have to keep on sending the message of Love to each other. You say that I am the Ambassador of Peace. We are all Ambassadors of Peace. You are too. Everybody in this room are Ambassadors of Peace. Just the fact that we are not participating in War. The fact that we are here, and we are what we are, means that we are in the Peace Industry. All of us. John and I used to say that our apartment in the Dakota is a conceptual monastry, just for the two of us. And when we go out of the Dakota, we get so many people communicating with us, so it's very important that we had silence and quietness. And my apartment is a very small space compared to the world. And I need that for my peace of mind. You should be kind to each other. You should come together, hug each other, love each other, express our love to each other and we should make it work. We should finally create a world that is a totally an Earth for Us. So let's do it. Without a doubt, our best trail camera capture yet: the first documented observation of a cougar with kittens in Minnesota in modern history. Turn up the volume to hear all the vocalizations. The footage, which was captured on March 25, shows a cougar with 3 large kittens while they feed on a deer they killed just south of Voyageurs National Park. We captured this surreal footage because we started a study to understand the survival and mortality patterns of deer in our area this winter. As part of that work, we GPS-collared several deer in the area in January. In late March, we received a mortality signal from a GPS-collared deer and found the carcass buried under a pile of leaves on a hillside—a tell tale sign of feline predation. We suspected it was likely a bobcat but thought, just possibly, it could be a cougar. So we put up two trail cameras on the cached deer carcass and 4 hours later, two cougar kittens returned to the kill. The entire family showed up that evening and spent hours in front of our cameras. In total, we captured 7.3 hr (435 minutes) of video footage of these animals. We will share more footage soon! Huge thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for supporting the Voyageurs Wolf Project and the recent effort to understand deer survival in the area. Their support was critical to this observation—without it, we would never have captured this footage. And huge thanks to the >10,600 donors who have supported our project and enabled us to purchase trail cameras supplies. The cameras (and batteries, SD cards, mounts) we set at this kill were purchased with funds from donations.

The largest pack in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem this past winter: the Blackstone Pack. Nice of them to give the camera a few nibbles on their way by! If you enjoy videos like this, we need your help because almost all of our trail camera work is supported by donors. This footage was literally captured because of donors. We simply need folks who enjoy such content to make a small donation ($10, $25, $50) to our project at the link below to help us cover the costs associated with keeping 350-400 trail cameras going year round. $30 purchases batteries for a camera, $200 purchases a new camera set-up. Think about it: most people regularly pay $10-20 per month for Netflix, Hulu, etc. so those companies can create endless content and make money. All we are asking for is $10-20 a year to help us cover our costs, and keep this work going so we can share it with everyone. Of course, the main point of the cameras is wolf research (and now, a little cougar research on the side) but cool footage of wildlife is a byproduct of having so many cameras out.
