In China, AI and the infrastructure needed to power it are presented as engines of national progress, liberation, and Global South power. Here in the United States, AI is increasingly portrayed as inherently sinister, its companies are targeted by far-left activists, and opposition to data-center development has become one of the left’s most popular organizing causes. The contrast should be obvious. China is building with the intention of leading the future, while much of the American left is organizing against the infrastructure the United States will need to compete.

One of the (many) reasons I think people are so anti-AI is that it’s a gratuitous display of wealth inequality. The average person’s life is difficult, expensive, and getting any kind of loan sucks - unless you’re raising billions of dollars to build an AI data center.
