John Leguizamo initially turned down the role for Benny Blanco four times as he didn’t want to get typecast as another Latin drug dealer. The role nearly went to Benicio del Toro. He eventually agreed to do the part under one condition; he was given freedom to improvise and make script changes that would alter Benny’s backstory. In the novel the film is based on, Benny was less layered and more of a simple, hot headed drug dealer. Leguizamo changed him in one fundamental way - he made him a Carlito Brigante superfan. Benny idolized Carlito from a very young. He grew up hearing stories about how he ran Spanish Harlem and how he was connected to the mob. He was so infatuated with him he's literally starstruck when he first sees him (see below). This is why Carlito’s dismissal of him was so devastating to Benny. He had built his whole identity around Carlito, only to be humiliated and brushed off. That humiliation leads to rage, which becomes the driving force of Benny’s character, and what ultimately leads to Carlito’s demise. Benny represents the greatest threat to Carlito: time catching up with him. He is, in many ways, Carlito as a younger man - without the honor or criminal codes that defined him. After watching infinite hours of 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮 𝗙𝗦𝗗 videos I at last got to try it first hand today in Amsterdam. 🥳 TLDR: it is so buttery-smooth and human-like that it is a boring experience... and this is the biggest compliment we can give to self driving car! 👏 Overall it handles any amount of pedestrian and bikes without harsh braking, setting the right speed in smaller roads slowing down without hard stops when interacting with pedestrians. If you have ever been in Amsterdam (or the Netherlands), you know bikes rule supreme, and FSD seems to handle 🚴🚴‍♂️without any issues, even in US, where the bulk of data comes from, bikes are not as common. Here are some highlights: • 1:12 - politely wait for pedestrian to pass • 2:10 - waits for all pedestrian and bikes to do what they do in Amsterdam... stopping in the middle of the street and talking 🤦‍♂️ ... and then confidently starts as soon the road is free • 3:18 - slows down from 18 Km/h to 12 Km/h to pass the usual pedestrian walking with a bike in a narrow canal street • 4:10 - waits for a bike to pass and picks the right left lane to turn: I have seen many drivers, not only tourists, wrongly use the tram lane to turn instead of the correct one • 5:05 - stops to let a guy cross in a random place • 5:55 - waits for a bike approaching pretty fast from the right side: again, I have seen drivers have to brake hard or cyclist having to avoid cars which had not seen them coming Thanks Tesla Europe, Middle East & Africa for the nice ride and congrats to the whole Tesla AI team, you rock 🤘 $TSLA Kees Roelandschap Florian Minderop Tesla Owners Club Nederland 🇳🇱

Would you like to save $50,000 on your taxes and drive a G Wagon? Let me tell you about Section 179. It’s not a free lunch, but it’s an interesting idea for small business owners. Here’s how it works and why I think it’s a terrible idea. — Section 179 lets you deduct the entire cost of a vehicle from your taxes as long as it weighs over 6,000 lbs. So, again, it’s not a free car — you’re deducting the cost of the car from how much you earned and therefore paying less tax. But here’s the catch: it has to be used exclusively for your business. The upside is lower taxes. This could be big money—I was looking at a G-Wagon listing just before recording, and some of them are $200,000. Let’s say you’re in a 25% tax bracket; that’s $50,000 in tax savings. “But you’re still $150,000 in the hole!” you say. That’s why people finance the purchase. Let’s say you put only $25K or $50K down and then sign a note for the rest. As I understand it (and I’m not a CPA, so please correct me if I’m wrong!),, you still get to write off the truck's entire value. — Now here are three reasons why you shouldn’t do this. 1. You don’t get to claim depreciation forever. Suppose you drive around for a couple of years, depreciate the value by half, and sell for $100,000. Because you already wrote off the whole value, $100K is considered profit, and you get taxed on it. 2. You have a $200,000 truck to worry about. It’ll cost more than my $15,000 Subaru to repair when that thing breaks down. If you care about saving $50k on taxes this much, you shouldn’t be driving a dumbass $200k SUV. 3. You look like a dork. My fox shooting garden defending AI robot is finally done and WORKING! 🤩 (Don’t worry it only shoots 💦 water) After months of slowly moving forward with each part I finished the last step to train a TensorFlow model on the footage of the 🦊 fox I collected hours of footage 📹 with the fox roaming around my garden, from this I labeled around 2000 images with the fox by hand ✋ Honestly, I was quite skeptical training the model was actually gonna work, maybe this was partly the reason I avoided working on this until the very end. If I couldn’t train a model to detect the fox, this whole robot would never be able to function properly. On the flipside though, with no previous experience in hardware or electronics there was a bit of a learning curve and I didn’t want to end up labeling thousands of images, training a TensorFlow model, only to fail on building the hardware. As I started building, I realized that mixing hardware and software adds quite another dimension to debugging things. At times I wasted hours debugging code in my IDE, only to realize the issue was somewhere in the electronics. Furthermore, combining this side project with a full time job and a young family, is not always easy. It can be quite frustrating, to know you only need 4 hours of concentrated effort for a small task, having to spread it out across a week of 20min increments. Then, a few months into the build I noticed the fox had stopped coming to my garden, in fact one day, I recorded her walking with 3 cute little 🐶 pups, and the next day I saw her moving out of my garden completely. Did she know I was building a robot? I had this strange mix of feelings, happy my garden was safe from poop and digging, happy she was safe with her pups, but how was I gonna finish this project if my robot had no fox to detect? For sure they would be back next year, I figured I could postpone the whole thing until next winter, but I also knew it was gonna be much harder to pick up momentum if I did let it sit there for six months. So I decided to keep working, hoping the fox would reappear,.. but she never did. As I finished labeling the footage and started training my model, I could finally see the mAP results, quantifying the precision of my object detection model. It was measuring at 78% across different metrics on detecting my fox. I quickly ran the model on some of the video footage I got from my fox. Inference speed took a hit, but it did a near perfect job detecting the fox, even when she was deep down in the grass or wizzing past in a motion blur. It took me by surprise how well it worked. With the default model I had to drop my confidence threshold way down to 15%, to recognize the fox as 🦜“bird” in one or two frames, with my custom model it followed the fox all the way down to the back of the garden! Still this didn’t solve the issue of there being no actual fox in my garden and how was I gonna wrap this project in a short timeframe. I played with the idea of putting a fox toy 🧸 on an RC 🚗 car, or borrowing a dog to run around the garden to test. Friends suggested I run around the garden in a fox costume.. what a ridiculous idea. I wasn’t really feeling the idea of running around the garden in a floppy cloth fox 🎭 costume, but had a look anyway. I came across these self inflating costumes. This actually could be perfect. Since it’s inflated, it would hold its shape super well, making it much easier to label, train and be recognized by my robot. So I got the costume and shot a time lapse of myself as a fox walking around the garden. I labeled it to around 600 images. Ran the model training again and got a mAP result of 82%. This was even better than my real fox! At this point I knew this was gonna work. So here’s the final 🎥 video, just having some fun with it. I’ll update here whenever the real fox does come back. I've been using FSD in my Tesla Model X for nearly a year. Here's the Good, the Bad and the Ugly on Tesla's FSD... The Good: - FSD is bar far, the most advanced driving technology I've ever experienced in any vehicle. - I use it every day, on every drive. Why? Because it reduces my driving work substantially. It keeps the car centered in the lane, keeps an appropriate following distance, stops for red lights and stop signs, turns where I need to turn and handles 99% of my driving tasks. - I think driving with FSD is FAR safer than driving without it because it reduces the "dumb" mistakes that drivers make that cause accidents. Mistakes like being distracted and missing the fact that the light is turning red or that the car in front of you just hit the breaks, or swerving out of your lane, or forgetting an exit or a turn and trying to make a heroic move to stay on course. All of these things are handled by FSD with grace and it likely is saving countless accidents. - Long drives and road trips are a pleasure with FSD because you are not fatigued with the many thousands of micro driving tasks, such as keeping the car centered in the lane or even worrying about where you're going. The car does all of that for you (and Navigate on Autopilot also does 95% of this for road trips). - When I use FSD, I have near-0 road rage, never speed up rapidly for no good reason and I am generally a more relaxed driver. The Bad: - Sometimes FSD has Schizophrenia, sees things that aren't there, slows for no reason, is indecisive on whether to go or stop which causes it to do extreme movements of the steering wheel, breaks and accelerator. In most of these circumstances, it's not unsafe, but as the driver sitting in the driver's seat, it is quite embarrassing, especially if you have passengers in the vehicle. - There are times when FSD makes a truly unsafe mistake, misses a red light (super rare) and tries to go when it should clearly stop, or slams on the break because it thinks a car might cross paths when the car was clearly not going to. In all these instances, it's super easy to take over and correct FSD's mistake. I don't even think twice about it...I quickly take over, correct the mistake, and put it back on FSD. The Ugly: - FSD is nearly useless in parking lots. It is surprisingly bad, especially since Elon Musk introduced the "Summon" feature long before FSD was released publicly. He said "just like humans, the AI also needs to learn driving by starting in the parking lot." 5 Years later, Summon still sucks and FSD has no idea how to drive in a parking lot. - Despite the many praises that a specific release often gets on Twitter, my personal experience has been that a new release could actually be worse than the previous version. For example, when my FSD upgraded from 10.69 to 11.3, it lost its ability to get in & out of HOV lanes on the freeway (I live in Scottsdale AZ). This simple loss of functionality (which returned with 11.4) caused numerous missed exits and route delays due to my over-reliance on FSD. - FSD makes some incredibly bad choices that are unexplainable, like certain lane changes, or last-second preparation to try and make a turn from 3 lanes away. These mistakes get better and worse with each release...it's a mixed bag as to what you're going to get with an update. - Your car's FSD never ever learns or improves by user input (not without an update). So it will make the exact same mistake in the exact same location, every, single, time. That can be super annoying. Conclusion: Despite the shortcomings, FSD is a technology marvel that I prefer not to live without. I don't see myself having a primary car that doesn't have Tesla-level FSD capabilities anytime in the future. Even the basic Autopilot features of Tesla are far superior to any other vehicle I've experienced. And despite what Elon says, the rate of improvement that I have experienced in the past year will not put it on a trajectory to be ready without a backup driver anytime in the next year or two. But with a backup driver, FSD is incredible, makes driving safer and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
