I know this is a bit of a weird answer but I’d say guts. Take the guts to go out into a convention, or meet, or even go out into a furry event and just talk to people. Take the guts to experience life and what it has to offer and take the guts to experience furry stuff

For stickers, is it a general rule of thumb to stick with the one artist/art style when getting them made? Or is it down to personal preference?

Personal preference! You can get stickers from a variety of artists or just stick to one for all of them

I would say. Ref sheet Badge Some furry merch tail, and or the shirt. But i when to my 1st con with nothing.

This is my suggestion for furries, you're not limited to a single fursona, but you should stick to one that makes you stand out the most and be the most recognisable This is not advice but an opinion, stick to something that you'll like out of your design concept and keep it!!!
